It's the most efficient way to destroying another human being with hand to hand combat at this time. The sport is constantly evolving. Jujitsu will make you able to submit and seriously injure people with just a few months of training. I was the biggest guy in my platoon. They wouldn't let me train 1v1 it was usually 1v2 and up to 1v5. It's possible to win, but you can't fight the same way you would 1v1, completely different attitude and style. And by "biggest guy" I mean 6' 215 pounds, not a monster.

Do you really think that you, on your own, in your lifespan, can learn more about "how to fight" than the people who have dedicated all their life through generations to develop what we now know as "martial arts"?

They generally weren't. I went into the military with 5 years of boxing, wrestling and (of all things) Tae Kwon Do. At first I got my ass kicked a lot, but we had a golden gloves boxer a champion college wrestler a JR Olympics TKD champion and a few gifted amateurs in our platoon and I learned a lot. By year 2 I was giving a lot of hell to upwards of 3 or 4 people. I found 5 almost impossible to do anything but pull a draw against, and it was mainly because they got in each others way.
