Certified welder here, not bad. To improve, pull the trigger so you have longer stickout (about 6") and guide the wire with your hand. Don't worry about using gloves, they're clunky and get in the way. I find bare hands is the best.

The holes are when you break the arc.

1. Go buy a proper auto adjusting mask, most of your welds look like the problem is they are being done blind, not the weld settings.
2. Stop trying to tag weld it up, it's easier IF YOU CAN SEE WHAT YOUR DOING(see 1) to make a continuous weld than it it is spot weld.
3. Apply the rod before or after the welding tip, into the weld pool and not directly into it.

I used to weld like you do OP until I bought a descent welding mask, fuck all point trying to do what people tell you to do, if you can't see while making the weld.

steel can handle much more heat and without it u get the stumbling spots in your pic.
and adjust your mask - you need to see the puddle. look up the welding tips videos from Jody Collier on youtube - he knows what to do and can show it to u.
