All the services serve different roles, although the Army and Marines get kinda blurry sometimes.

The idea behind the Marines is that they're part of the Navy - they're an invasion force. The idea is that we'd send them overseas to invade a country from the sea. They're supposed to be the first ground troops in.

The Army, on the other hand, is for home defense and protracted war, not quick action. They come in after the Marines have cleared a foothold and then proceed to march across the countryside, sending Jerry back to the Keiser.

These days it's all mixed up, but think: the Army fought in the war of 1812, the Marines invaded the Barbary Coast.

I didn't work the flightline, so I didn't deal with pilots much, but from what I could tell that seems to match my experience. I dealt with fighter pilots more because we had three F15 groups where I was stationed. Drones weren't a thing back then, so no clue there.

The Air Force is funny - the Army and Marines send out their enlisted to fight. The Navy sends enlisted and officers out on the ships. The Air Force keeps its enlisted back on the base and sends its officers out to die - and after dealing with one too many of those fuckers, I wouldn't have minded seeing a couple crash a burn, let me tell you.

Why not do both. Also pick a job in whatever branch you decide that translates well to the civilian world. That's what I did, and it has paid off. You could come out of the military with a degree and four or more years of experience in whatever job you chose. It's far from easy, but I thought it was worth it, and I'm not fucked up in the head either.

I did flood an O2 N2 plant with shit once. I got covered from head to toe with 3 week old fermented shit when I opened a clean-out 2 decks below. As I stepped back and spit a piece of shit out on the floor. I said SHIT!

It was the fall of 1967 - I had a girlfriend who's father was a big Marine, and I wanted to impress her/him, so I visited a Recruiter, and he came over to visit my parents to allow me to sign up, even thought I was only 17.

I was supposed to go Infantry, but got assigned to Motor Pool at Camp Pendelton, which I fucking hated. I mouthed-off to some butter-bar Lieutenant, and the next thing I know, I'm being called into the C.O.'s office and told "you got your wish - you're going to Viet Nam...

Took a while to get there, and Saigon was cool. Had my first piece of ass there - was ok, but those Vietnamese girls are pretty skinny if you ask me.

Got orders in from my new Lieuy - was being sent to Quang Tri, a place called Khe Sahn. A funny camp out in the middle of nowhere.

Every night, there would be probing actions by the Cong which we repulsed. Nothing big, just figured that they were harassing us.

One night, fucking Mortars start falling in camp. The cooks got killed first, then the shit really hit the fan. We had to fight like motherfuckers. I thought I was going to die at least a dozen times that night. Charlie was so determined that they didn't care about crawling over dead bodies.

I kept killing and killing and killing, and they just never seemed to stop. Took a round through my bicep (felt like a cramp), but kept on fighting.

And then - like that - Poof - they were gone.

Fucking piece of shit Viet Cong. Everyone in the camp when to the fences, and any wounded got shot in the back of the head.

I don't ever want to go to war again. That's why I'm voting for Sanders.

My advice, if you end up doing admin: the enlisted people know how to do their job - let them do it. Your job is to make sure they have everything they need to do their job (which isn't the same as everything they want). Protect them from the political bullshit and let them work - they'll reward you with loyalty. Don't underestimate the value of the good will of the enlisted.

The initial clean up wasn't too long. But they did have to strip all the lagging off the bulked and re lag it. I ended up having to go to medical after to took a bedidine shower and get a needle with what felt like a golf ball injected into my ass cheek.
