Knives make terrible defensive weapons. But if it is all you have access to it is better than fists. Of the two you said I would say neither. Can you even carry a fixed blade where you live? Also Knives are stupid useful with things other than self defense. It's a good idea to carry one regardless just in case you need to open something, or screw something in, or etc.

That said, I'm putting together money to get a Taurus PT 111 Millenium G2 which can be had for as little as $250. Price point of a Hi-Point with performance of a shitty Glock.

For untrained people I generally don't recommend a knife being your primary go-to for self defense. I'd probably say get something like a spyderco civilian or matriarch. The civilian was made for law enforcement when they could not carry a gun. The matriarch is basically a cheaper version marketed for people who aren't trained in knife fighting. I believe it was marketed in south africa for women to defend against rape, but its definitely not a girly knife. you could also get a clone on aliexpress if it appears to be decent quality, or one of the serrated hawkbills from their byrd line would probably work.

I do like knifes that have a finger hole to keep the knife in your hand. Check out the smith and wesson hrt bear claw. You can get them or knock offs (doesn't really matter) on ebay for like $5 and they would definitely ruin someones day.

You can get much better knives for even the same price as some mtechs. As far a cheap shit goes though, a cheapo fixed blade is probably fine. No moving parts so more quality can go into the blade itself and it's still a pointy piece of metal it should stab anyway.

I was going to say a Spyderco Para-Military 2 G10 knife but they can be around 200 dollars, well at least mine was. It has a pretty long blade, sharp as hell, I've had mine for about 2 years and there is no blade play left to right or up and down and it's just a all round good knife.

Syderco makes a variety of good knives, some cheaper than others.
