I've been using manual transmission since i got the license and been working daily with driving for five years. A few months ago i changed car and it was Automatic. It was acually quite nice to not need to like think about it.

I drive manual daily. It is a huge pain in the ass on long stop and go sessions in highway traffic though.

Frankly, IDGAF about performance, mileage, or even drivability. If I cares about that shit I wouldn't drive a lifted 4WD brick with no sway bars. I only care about the fun of the ride and feel of the road, and all the BS electronics and auto transmissions just ruin it for me.

I don't even have ABS. I despise all automotive electronics other than EFI and the ignition system. Nothing else is required.

It's not fear of the future, it's intense dislike of having it forced upon us. I'm not a fan of the government (US gov, here) ordering all cars to be safe, fuel-efficient little computers with wheels. I like a good stiff ride, open air, and complete and utter undisputed control of my vehicle.

Additionally, when a sensor breaks (and they do) on one of your little computerized POSs, you're fucked until you get it to the dealership to replace it. Something goes wrong on my Jeep and I can usually fix it with tools I have in the vehicle and be on my merry way.

Electronics in cars is great for idiots who don't know how cars work or how to drive in less-than-perfect conditions. It's just an annoyance to the mechanically inclined who truly enjoy driving.

I drive a manual daily, but it's an older truck. I could easily find an automatic version of my truck, but I won't. That's because driving a manual actually makes you feel like you're driving, and not just getting in and doing nothing.

Now, if I commuted in 15 minute+ stop and go traffic, hands down I would totally drive an automatic, but it all depends on your individual situation.

And, older cars with manuals get better mileage compared to older cars with automatics.

The only thing that would ever convince me to go to an auto is for a V8 swap. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of good 4WD manual transmissions that A. Fit in a Jeep and B. Can handle a V8. The medium-duty AX-15 that comes stock behind an AMC 4.0 is about the best option for most Jeepers, and it's just not enough for, say, a 5.3 Vortec. Anyone who goes bigger than a 5.3 to like a 6.0 is almost forced to go auto, just because there aren't good transmissions that can handle the torque and fit in the vehicle. When I someday do a V8 swap I'll be keeping my AX-15, but I won't be at all surprised if I grenade a few along the way.

Have you literally never attempted to follow GPS instructions for how to get anywhere in a city around 5 or 6 PM? Unless you like getting stuck in traffic for hours and hours, I wouldn't say computers are better at it. I use my GPS to locate where I'm going, and then I use it as an old-school map to decide my route myself based on traffic patterns.
