In most european countries its very difficult to get a gun license and you cant buy one without.

In germany you can have a gun if you are a hunter. And to be a hunter you need a hunting license that you need to take expensive courses to get it. Also we dont have huge areas of wildernes like you have in the us, so you have to find a place where you would actually be allowed to hunt etc etc.

Other possibility is if you are a sports shooter, for that you need to join a shooting club and shoot there for a while before you can get your own permit...

Or if you are some professional private security body guard type, but obviously noone is that. Just being security at a club or something is not a valid reason.


So its not impossible to get a gun, but its very expensive and you need to invest quite some time till you get one.

Also you cant get all kinds of guns, like no assault rifles etc. And you need a proper gun safe where you need to store it, which is expensive as well.

I guess the guns themselfes are also more expensive since the market is not so big.

It's not like they just hand you a gun in the US. There are reasons for someone to be prohibited from ownership. We just have a very straight forward process, you fill out a firm with the required information and then a background check is conducted. In most of the Rifles have to be a minimum length, so you could say own an AK47, because it is above the minimum length requirement. However you couldn't just own a AKS-74U because it is below the minimum length and so requires a tax stamp and registering as a SBR (short barrel rifle). That why in the US you can buy alot of the short version guns with no stock because they are pistols under ATF rules. Some companies have started selling their carbines/smgs as "Pistols" with an "arm brace" (which is basically a stock but looks like a retarded crouch).

Guns in general are cheaper here. SBRs can be a pain in the ass, the SBR is a registered firearm and you are required to keep your registration paper work with the gun at all times. Also the local police chief or sheriff is required to sign off on it so depending on their attitude you may have just made yourself a target for harassment.

It's not so much the ATF as congress. They make the actual firearm laws, the ATF has to enforce them. The AR and AK pistols were in response to the NFA changes in the late 60s and 86, and the assault weapon ban of 94.
