What's wrong with using taxes to fund public services like higher public education and health care?

>Makes our workforce more competitive
>Creates opportunities for individuals to become entrepreneurs
>Takes health care burden off of employers, allowing them to expand and hire more people for higher wages

If America wants to compete, shouldn't it invest in making its workforce more competetive?
>>
Not to mention evening the playing field so that a kid born to broke parents can have a chance to be as self made as someone who "got a small loan of a million dollars" from their parents.
>>
>>676547108
It sounds nice yes, but what makes you think it will work?
>>
Nothing... Really...
However then it needs to work perfectly which it never can, because the world is not perfect.
So let's settle for somewhat perfected systems, sadly, those doesn't exist either.
It's a nice thought that's extraordinarily difficult to pull off.
>>
>>676547657
there's a reason immigrants are flocking to scandinavia
>>
>>676547657
What makes you think it won't? You can go to Denmark right now and see it works in person. They're also the best rated country in the world for business, so the "antibusiness" label doesn't work. A mixed market system makes for a stronger capitalism.
>>
>>676547824
In Scandinavia. But in America will it work? Will the government actually be able to handle this?
>>
I already graduated college and paid off my student loans. I get health insurance through my employer. For me, Bernie's most-repeated proposals are nothing more than higher taxes to pay for things I already have/had.
>>
USA:
>has no problem paying for bombs that kill women and children
>complains about paying for your neighbors cancer treatment
>>
>>676547893
Because it will be implemented by the same government that caused the global recession
>>
Simple. Raising taxes raises the price of goods, and subsequently the price of loans. Small businesses would cost substantially more to fund and set up, diminishing entrepreneurial endeavors. Health care will be handled by the government, where people will be again paying fees for every time they DON'T or can't afford it.

And, might I add, it won't make anything competitive. When everything is being provided for you and real work doesn't get you anything, then nobody is going to compete.
>>
>>676547108
You do understand that the president is a figurehead. He has little power. Most of his plans will never pass congress, so a vote for him is a vote for four years of stagnation.

Nothing is perfect, but why is this an argument? What we can do is look at what works best.

And right now the happiest, healthiest, wealthiest countries in the world with the most freedom and best business climate are in Scandinavia and Iceland and Denmark, where they spend public money on public welfare. It enables the public to spend their money in the economy rather than on debt slavery.

College is an unnecessary and highly inefficient method of education. Education should be focused on learning skills, not collegiate bullshit. Same goes for elementary and secondary schools.

Government is the reason tuition is $15k instead of $3k. The more they play with it, the lower the quality and higher the price.

Universal healthcare is only solving the problems you created with Obamacare. It will continue to drive prices up and the country will be further in debt.

There's a lot wrong here but let me respond to this:

"it won't make anything competitive. When everything is being provided for you and real work doesn't get you anything, then nobody is going to compete."

I'm talking about competition INTERNATIONALLY. Other countries are siphoning our goods and our people. I know several people who left the USA to go to Germany where they could get free education. They became engineers and stayed there because why not?

Meanwhile we are importing more than we are exporting and shipping jobs overseas. That's not competetive, that's bending over.

If we want to compete internationally we need an educated and healthy and happy workforce.

For the love of Spaghetti, please stop trying to use tiny European countries as an example of what the US would be like. They talk about American exceptionalism, but there are many cases in which we *are* fundamentally different from the rest of the world.

The country was built upon the ideals of individual freedom from the ruling class. We are a union of separate states, not one single body. We are much larger than any of these countries.

We are simply fundamentally different in structure and attitude from the majority of the world. We are not fucking Denmark.

Business bought off government so that government looked the other way. It was bankers that caused it, not government. It's not splitting hairs, it's responding to your argument that government can't be trusted because they caused the recession.

They didn't. They just didn't prevent it. And they should have. Which is why we need someone to stand up to them and prevent it from happening again.

There's a significant difference there. If I park a car on a flat hill near a cliff and leave it in neutral. But At the end of the day I did not roll that motherfucker off the cliff, so don't say it's my fucking fault.

Healthcare costs are going up because the government in its infinite wisdom has committed the cardinal sin of capitalism and reduced competition. Insurance companies are just a shitty middle man and their presence by its very nature has increased healthcare costs through the decades. Now you are REQUIRED BY LAW to buy into their shit. Universal healthcare not only solves Obamacare, but solves the issue that made the ACA so shitty in the first place.

The single-payer system works akin to how an organization gives care to its employees. Everybody puts a bit of their paycheck into the company pool and collectively have insured care. It's just now, you won't have to deal with dipshit insurance companies complicating the transaction.

I agree with Sanders, but the Scandinavian economies are built around a small, highly educated work force driven by high-tech sectors and manufacturing. The USA economy is, like the UK, centered around finance and banking, this has an impact on society and culture; thus the situation in Scandinavia will never likely be reproduced in these countries. That's not to say that the USA shouldn't invest money into the public sector of course, but that's a different argument.

Though I think there are better alternatives. Harsh penalties for harbouring or employing illegals, a requirement for a proof of citizenship along with ID in all matters that require an ID, tattoo illegals so if the sneak in again we just kill them, and swift death sentences for aiding, trafficking, or selling drugs. Much cheaper.

People don't realize that we already pay taxes for public schools, for roads, for emergency services. They bitch about socialism, but forget at the end of the year, they pay for those things. As a home owner, I pay a county tax, a MUD tax (municipal utility district) and school taxes which cover tertiary and primary schools. A little more spread out over the hundreds of thousands in my area, isn't going to affect anyones lifestyle... but it's going to do so much for those who can't.
>>
If taxation is theft, then the rights of others takes away your freedom by the sane kind of logic. Society is interdependent, no matter what you say. We all have rights and therefore we all have obligations. If we want a functional society, there will be SOME level of collectivism.

Taxation without representation is theft. Taxation without a ROI is theft.

Taxation that BENEFITS us in the form of public services, parks, schools, libraries, fire departments, food inspection, roads, national guard - these are the hallmarks of a functional society, NOT of violence and theft.

All of the services have to be paid for. So either you imagine that the government will negotiate/dictate *lower* prices for healthcare services or the total cost to taxpayers will rise significantly, since more services will be used by people forced to pay for them.

The government won't do that and the total costs will rise further. And by the time you cucks realize, it will be too late.

The government should get out of healthcare completely. Get rid of Medicare and all that shit and let people help others voluntarily in their communities.

Don't mark yourself off just yet, you may still want to take advantage of free education if it means to improve your life. I have seen 60-year olds in my classes before.

Really college shouldn't be needed again and skills training should be sufficient. College in America is a joke, it's just another business. We force everyone into college and put down vocational schools all so colleges can make a fortune through tuition subsidized by government loans. College doesn't teach critical thinking anymore, a number of recent college grads I've worked with all fail at it. Most American colleges and universities have become degree mills.
>>
>>676553034

Nigger, that quoted post is groundwork to start with. Once you have those sections by the balls, you take the big corporations next. Tax them a percentage of their profits and earnings. It might vary from year to year, depending on their margins, but it would still be a substantial payout. Another good options is to obliterate tax negation for religions. Those fucks make a crap tonne of money, and if they are going to occupy land that could be better used, then they should have to pay taxes for it. Otherwise, they can thin themselves out and stop having so many fucking churches that supposedly 'live on donations'.

FOX says Bernie's plan would be $70 billion per year which is cheaper. And I'm going with Fox because obviously they are going to be the most hysterical about anything Bernie says.

One thing I've noticed, that nobody else seems to have caught onto, is that Bernie says public education would be free for those that work hard and want it. This would probably take the form of full rides for students with good grades, and probably we would have some preference for free rides for people who are looking to get into areas that we need employment in. Doctors, Engineers, all of that.

So has bernie presented an actual plan on how to redistribute this money to free health care like he claims? Specifics?

Seems to me his only solution is "take money from the rich and give to the poor". Pretty obvious why people want him in so much, they want free shit without needing to work for it. There should be some sort of emergency healthcare option, but I don't think the solution should just be free hospital visits whenever the fuck you want.

Don't a lot of these countries with free health care have a lot of problems with people wasting tax dollars on menial things like anxiety or sprains?

The America of my time line is a laboratory example of what can happen to democracies, what has eventually happened to all perfect democracies throughout all histories. A perfect democracy, a ‘warm body’ democracy in which every adult may vote and all votes count equally, has no internal feedback for self-correction. It depends solely on the wisdom and self-restraint of citizens… which is opposed by the folly and lack of self-restraint of other citizens. What is supposed to happen in a democracy is that each sovereign citizen will always vote in the public interest for the safety and welfare of all. But what does happen is that he votes his own self-interest as he sees it… which for the majority translates as ‘Bread and Circuses.’

‘Bread and Circuses’ is the cancer of democracy, the fatal disease for which there is no cure. Democracy often works beautifully at first. But once a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader—the barbarians enter Rome.

Robert A. Heinlein

For some reason they lumped Mexicans in with whites in this graph so the data on white people is questionable. Maybe they were worried that the table would show a substantial difference between certain groups of people.
