like I could stroll down to some kind of medical center and start talking to people about it, but that'll probably set me down a really long road before I actually start getting hormones in my possession

dunno where I would go where I live to maybe start the process soon and start, say, six months from now or sooner.

I doubt there's any specific gender specialists anywhere where I live. It's Cali, but the very most conservative part of it. There's nothing that makes it easy. My only option locally seems to be just waltzing into a hospital and talking to someone about my issues.

Luckily I'm alright with the family. I came out to my mom and siblings (dad's out of the picture). Friends don't know yet, so I'm somewhat concerned about alienating some people I knew. But I plan to be out to everyone before I actually start HRT anyway because I wouldn't be able to keep it secret forever even if I wanted to. Whether that burns bridges or not, it'll have to be done.

That does sound a lot better than them expecting you to dress like your preferred gender before you feel ready to do it, though. That's a relief. I was planning for people who know me to know that I'm in the process of transitioning, but I wasn't going to go out wearing female clothes until I felt I passed better (lose weight, whatever effects I can get from HRT, get decent at posture, have a decent voice from training) so I avoid getting dirty looks when I'm dressed the way I want. So that works for me.

One of my primary issues is just not having any sort of connections or resources. I don't have a doctor, not even a family doctor. No insurance. No car. No income at the moment.

I think what I need is money and a car before I can get started. Then I can go to where I need to be and attend appointments at my own pace. I still haven't decided exactly where I would go, though.

It's more a matter of seeing what I have ahead of me. I would transition regardless of what anyone else in my life thought, I think. But that would be a far more painful journey to take. As it stands, I think I've gotten pretty lucky.

After all, loved ones are a part of personal happiness as well. You lose some of that but gain more. If it were the case that literally everyone in my life was against me transitioning and I knew the world would be an incredibly hostile, isolating place once I did so, then I might have to consider whether transitioning would be a net gain or net loss in terms of happiness.

The real world is a bit more nuanced than that, though. So I know whatever I lose I could gain in some way. It would probably be a little while longer before I feel ready for it in that case, though.

My sense of style is based on what I would want to wear as a woman (compromised with what would actually look good with my body type), rather than what's the most 'girly' or 'feminine' thing I could wear. It's kinda girly, maybe a bit goth (which counts for my current style as well), but not over the top. I also hardly wore any make-up on those days, just some eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick. Probably would be part of my daily ensemble since it's quick and easy to master.

As far as androgynous clothes, I actually do have plans for that. I've been getting gradually more andro as I got more comfortable with who I am, and as I actually transition I plan to get gradually more feminine as I do, rather than just straight up switching to female clothes one day out of nowhere.

There would be a bit of a cut-off between where I wear pants exclusively and start wearing dresses and skirts on occasion, but apart from that it should be more gradual.

I actually am on it. Not even 3 months in, and I'm still debating whether I'll ever even be passable even with it. Tell you this, really REALLY talk to a therapist beforehand. As I said just a bit up, almost 3 months in and I feel literally no different. Probably even worse off cause of how torn I am on the matter. If after talking it out and really going to an in depth discussion of it you feel like it's still the right way to go, then go for it. But know that there's like a 1% chance that you'll look legit passable. Doubly so remember, if you do start, at a point you'll be on it for life. Every day, pills. So legit make sure it's what you wanna do before say, 6 months.
