I'm 24, just graduated from law school. I have a law job lined up but the contract doesn't start for another 9 months. I moved back home and I've been doing consulting work for an organisation where I interned a couple of years ago. I can do most of my work from home/on the road and it earns me $3-5k/month, depending on how much work there is for me to do and what sort of work it is.

As a graduation present my parents gave me a car and all of my father's frequent flyer miles (he travels a lot for work). I get paid monthly so basically I've been doing the following:

I mainly test new features which only requires a good brain for connecting the dots and think like different kinds of users, including old people and retarded people (a.k.a. 60% of our users)

Also written an automated regression test tools written in PHP (Behat) and extended it for use at my current employer.

I also check security, using hacking tricks I tought/teach myself online.
For example, I have a picture of 8MB that is 225.000x225.000 pixels which makes web servers cache the file to a +-400GB picture, that always brings down servers.
It's all just a box of tricks I pull open to impress bosses and developers.

I also do some penetration testing using default tools like Nikto, Metasploit, all that kind of stuff.

And if a bug slips through that get's into production envionment, well hey.. I'm the only tester, testing can't confirm bug free for more than 95%, especially when you're the only one.

But I enjoy it so much that I don't slack at all, it's rewarding to solve puzzles and find issues.

My best hack was navigating a certain way through the two-factor authentication (visit a specific way through the pages) that allowed me to circumvent the two-factor authentication.

The developers still bring that shit up even though it was a year ago.

If you want to land a job in testing you should try it out, there are so many different positions, automated testing, feature testing, exploritory testing, security testing.

I just have this testing attitude all my life, for example, if I go to a supermarket and you can scan stuff, I try to enter 834.526.627.467 shopping bags and just let the system scan it, why? because I want to see if I can crash the register (and it did)

Well, I like learning about the law and how it works. I've never been in any serious legal trouble, but any time I've needed a lawyer I just did it myself -- always with favorable outcomes.

I'd go to the law library, look up relevant cases, write my own motions. Hell, half the books on my bookshelf are law books, probably some of the same ones you have. (Lots of professors post their syllabi online so I see what textbooks they're using and just buy them myself.)

It's a lot of work. It's rewarding but probably because I'm advocating for myself you know? Would I want to take on clients and other people's problems? I don't know. I think it would stress me out.
