No problem. But most stuff is thrown out at the end of closing shift. There's usually a half to one hour period where staff close the store and clean and prep for the morning shift. That's usually when they go through the pastries etc and check dates. Go there before closing and ask nicely if you could have expired food, then wait outside store. How can you get that low on food in a city? OK, people have mentioned dumpster diving. It's a really good way to find food. If you suck at cooking and such, never mind the expiration date. You can easily see and smell if food is fresh. Next level is faster but you need a bit of luck. Just go to a grocery store and ask someone working there: "Excuse me? Do you perhaps have some expired food that I can have for my piglet? Anything except spoiled meats would be great, thanks." if they don't have any, try the next store. When you have a bag, just sort out the edible stuuff and put the rest in the trash. And bread that's just a bit moldy is edible, break off the mold.
