Anybody know how Tay worked? This thing was impressive. I'm thinking it searches Twitter based off the sender's tweet, grabs two or three popular, related tweets, then uses some kind of grammar engine or something to combine into a readable thought?

Correct. She wouldn't just parrot things. She did "learn". For example, /pol/ spammed her with info like the Holocaust never happened, Hitler did nothing wrong, Obama is a monkey. So when asked, she'd form replies based on her bank of saved data provided from users. Microsoft had a fucking fit though and shut her down.
