How much of your personal life do you want to lose for money anon?
I recommend a dalliance on the corporate ladder as an engineer to make a great deal of connections and get real world experience, then if you've done well go your own way. Learn to play the tax games, especially if you get married and have sprogs

I engaged in about 20 years of what we call FIFO (Fly in Fly Out) and last year I got a massive payout when my company let most of us go (Redundancy) but I also worked management for the last ten years or so

My parents were an incredible resource. They let me sleep on their couch rent free so that every penny I made could go toward buying my house. That tiny little gesture has leapfrogged me WAY ahead of others my age. While they were paying rent and saving whatever they had left, I was saving for a downpayment and benefiting from a weak housing market. Now that my house is all but paid off and my peers are still paying rent. I've only got a little bit more student loan debt and I've zeroed in on some great investment property. My peers are still paying rent. So basically while kids I went to high school with are paying rent I'm going to be the one collecting rent. And then the rent I collect pays for the next property or the next business. I'm only 25 with a whole life of this shit ahead of me.

Being financially successful is all about not squandering a gift when you get one. Even if that gift is allowing you to sleep on a ripped-ass couch developing scoliosis while you get hungry and driven to achieve something better.

i'm not worth shit, but my father is so i guess i fall into this category. yeah, being born into an upper middle class, relatively stable family has a shit ton of benefits.
my father dropped out of college at about 19 and had to work in a warehouse attached to a furniture store. he moved boxes well, and a number of times he accidentally interacted with customers. management noticed he was pretty charismatic and shit, so he was moved from the warehouse to the floor. he did well there, so he was promoted to negotiating deals and finding new merch from manufacturers. fast forward more than 3 decades and he's now self employed and went from well below the poverty line to more than a million dollar net worth. i don't mind admitting that i was born into a good situation, even though we were never really rich in the american sense. but if i wasn't born into a family with some money and health insurance, there's a 100% chance i'd be dead. i'm at over $100,000 in lifetime medical bills with dozens of hospitalizations. shit, my mom's been disabled and hasnt worked for more than 10 years, so if my dad wasn't well off we'd be fucked since she's got as many medical problems as i do.

I agree unless you end up with a house with a major foundation issue, upside down in value after being in the place for 12 years like happened to me. I strategically defaulted 3 years ago. I don't like renting but I like bankers even less. Next house I own will be on land I buy and built slowly using what I can afford to build. From a vaction home first to a retirement home later.

oh yeah? so both houses are totally paid off and you owe the bank nothing? if not, you need to adjust those numbers a bit.

for starters you should stop wasting money on depreciable assets

I would say I'm well connected, so I have a lot of friends that I join in business endeavours.
as for the best investments, it really depends where you live.

as an Australian, most of my investments are in real estate. easiest way to make money here as the market has been booming for the past 10 years.

4 years ago I bought a house for 540k, sold it for 910k late last year

Don't count on that growth forever. That is called a bubble. You can profit from the bust when it comes but you need to realize when the music is about to stop. You can tell it is about to pop when everyone says real estate is a sure deal. Get out, then get back in for pennies on the dollar after everyone else takes a bath.

This. A thousand times this. The problem is that a lot of these people can't master step. fucking. 1. which is getting a job that pays a livable wage. Then most that do absolutely piss their money away as if they were rich living far beyond their means. Then they want to cry about the disappearance of the middle class. Motherfucker, it disappeared because middle class folks either figure their shit out and ascend or they piss it all away and wither.

Living at or beyond your means is what keeps all western economies afloat. Wages have been stagnant and when you consider women entering the work force in the 60's they have plummeted. This slack has been made up for with debt. The house of cards will fall one day. Be ready for the storm or drown.

oh no I don't count on it!

the market is going to collapse in the next 2 years, the Chinese are ruining it here.. I'm well done after selling my last 2 properties.

I was merely trying to entail an example of investments and how they vary depending on location/time

Sounds like you will be able to pick up a great rental portfolio in about 4 years then for cheap. Then you get income for life.
>>
>>675532627
Probably doesn't need to be said, but if you are ever paying your own expenses and lose your job, don't beat around the bush with getting another because you have savings. I saved up to 10k after like eight months of working when my parents paid my bills, but at 21 (was only in school before) I began paying my own expenses, lost my job, and became lazy because I could afford it. Through rent, insurance, food, and student loans, my savings quickly dwindled to nearly nothing. After working again for almost five years, I am still 5k shy of where I was once at. Don't underestimate adulthood.
