How do we measure the value of life? By usefulness or just by default all lives are valuable? In my personal opinion usefulness is what gives someone value. Once they are no longer needed they are no longer useful. Therefore murder isn't bad as long as you have a motive. Even if it's extremely general. Ex: let's kill people because of overpopulation, political reasons, justice.

As far as the Greeks go, and as far as most civilization before 1900, the average lifespan of human beings was much lower and people were getting married at younger ages.
