OK so OP here, but here's a quick overview on why they use maggots for wound debridement (google that if you dont want to sleep) basically its the removal of dead/necrotic tissue. and some species of maggot only eat the necrotic part, leaving the living part fresh and free of bacteria.
debridement can also be surgical and chemical as well.
OP again, Here's an example of Gas gangrene. It's by far the most deadly type of gangrene, and can take over in as little as a few hours. a simple infected wound could go from "ew gross" to "oh dear god I lost my leg" in less than 24 hrs. its caused by the clostridia bacteria.
