The real answer is because people are indoctrinated into their religions. It is not mental illness to succumb to indoctrination, and any of us could have, had we been born in a different place and time.

Escaping this indoctrination requires a certain level of intelligence, or at least introspectiveness, to be able to overcome years of automatically believing your parents as evolution has primed you to do.

Or being made to feel like a complete outsider. I had the misfortune of growing up in the Bible Belt, and being a metalhead during the late 80s and 90s. Went to a Christian school too. Funny thing is, I grew out of metal by the time I was 17 or so--metal became a joke and the whole grunge thing was going on. I became an atheist a couple years later. It was easy because I didn't feel any sense of community with those fuckers, so cutting ties with them and their beliefs completely, was nothing to me.

I saw a news report recently, about how church attendance in this region is declining sharply. Different pastors were on there talking about what they were doing to "fix" that. Well, for one, you might try not alienating your own fucking youth, and maybe, just maybe, they'll stick around.

I'm lucky to have been raised in a home without religion, in a country where critical thinking is taught in schools and religion is only studied as looking at belief systems, not promoting any particular religion as true.

If I'd been taken as a baby to a religious family who didn't teach curiosity, and sent me to a religious school, I could have ended up being extremely religious, despite being the same original baby.
