MLP: FIM featured and episode with ponies that resemble "fluffle ponies." The fan art community ran with it and created a large community dedicated to "fluffly pony" are and backstory. These are biotoys created by HASBRO, but were released into the wild by PETA and have since become a fast breeding nuisance.
Many people keep them as pets, and fan art dedicated to this concept began to be called "hugbox." A lot of people simply did not like the fluffly pony concept so they began creating "abuse" artwork to troll the hugboxes. A lot of the time, a piece of "abuse" artwork is just an edit of a "hugbox" work with a panel changed or things added, which is why the art style appears to change in a few. These edits of hugbox into abuse pictures became known as a "shitedit."
As time went on, many people began to like the abuse concept since it offered a lot of room for creativity. It became less about trolling and more about exploring the more latent feelings people have about fluffies. A fluffy pony has the basest qualities of a human; they are very ignorant yet overly confident, they are very selfish and greedy, they take everything for granted, and they act like children well into their adulthood. These qualities are a magnified reflection of everything most people hate about other people in general. Abuse art is a conduit to express this hate, since the fluffy is just a biotoy. Its why most of the abuse art centers around exploiting the aforementioned qualities of a fluffy.
Hope this helps. Just please understand that this community existed for a long time before threads started showing up on /b/. In fact, most of these pictures are several years old.
