different units are good for different situations. For scientific calculations etc metric is obviously better, but distances/heights/weights/temperatures in conversations are more intuitive the US way. Like say you're 5'10" and most people can picture that immediately, but saying "I am 2.238 meters" or "I weigh 53.75 kg" I have to do the conversions in my head before I can picture that. With temperatures, I think fahrenheit, while it is not particularly "logical" is more descriptive just because there is a bigger range.

Of course it's a matter of opinion, but who cares as long as you can convert between the two.

I actually have weird insight into this as a woodworker, americunt and a collegiate math major.

Metric system is logically superior. Honestly the fact that we don't use it is baffling. More so, we half use it. We can buy a liter or a gallon... like why? Metric is superior in science, tech and business.

Weirdly though the customary system (why we call it that is beyond me) works well with woodworking. Even Euro artisans use it sometimes. It just lends itself (only in small distances) to very intuitive design.

Tldr: metric is better except in very specific fields.

the reason tooling is made in standard is because that is the system the engineer decided to make it in
and the only reason they do that is for user ease, he expects more users to think in standard than metric
as people begin thinking in both standard and metric, tools will be more commonly made in metric than standard
then you get the same progression
as machines wear out they will be replaced with machines made using metric fasteners

as for the tools, any mechanic worth a damn already has a set of metric and standard tools
so there is no increased cost there
