Here in Finland everyone goes through more or less the same basic training, no matter if you are going to be special forces or a bicycle mechanic. While it may slow down the better rookies, at least everyone knows how to use a rifle. I'd imagine it would come in handy, if things are really starting to fall apart in the field. Pic is my old man on Treasure Island in early 1950, a few months after boot in San Diego and Pendleton training. Made it to Private, then Corporal rather quickly. Shipped off to Korea quickly made Sergeant just in time for Chosin.
