Well first off, the weather.
I still remember the first winter I experienced in Chicago.
Was not used to driving in snow, and got into an accident 2 times in one month.

Ethnicity is different as well.
Chicago is way more white/black while LA is much diverse (hispanics/asians/white/blacks)

There isn't much to do to chill in Chicago, but maybe this was because of the new friends I made here.

All in all, I think the general atmosphere is what makes them so different. LA in my opinion was much more easy going and fun-seeking.
Whereas in Chicago everyone seems to keep things to themselves and are focused in their 9 to 5s.

First when I moved from NY to LA,

Public transportation in LA is almost nonexistent, and I had a hell of a time waiting for buses that came hourly for a couple months.

Nightlife in LA shuts down way earlier as well, and a lot of nights I was left dissatisfied.
I can go on and on about the differences of LA and NY, but it really boils down to the public image of what people perceive of those two.
Hell, LA even speaks Spanish.

Texas is a lot like LA in that aspect.
Awesome Mexican food, weather, Hispanic population, etc.
