I felt this way until I started reading history books for fun and realize that knowing about the past actually prepares you to have a serious and objective view of the present, assuming you read a variety of historical accounts rather than just standard propoganda texts. You can even compare events of the past to those of the present or watch patterns in history. I think a good understanding of history prepares one to understand the current state of things.

I agree. Studying a bit about the Roman Republic with its two parties, the Optimates (rich patrician senators who defended the prerogatives of a plutocratic oligarchy) and the Populares (rich patrician demagogues who enriched themselves and became extremely powerful by seemingly fighting for the plebs) made today's politics make perfect sense.

What turned me off to history in university was the lame bias of all the instructors/professors. They'd always seem to gloss over the interesting stuff and focus on lame faggotry. In my first survey American history it was all about the indians and slavery. He didn't even really talk about the west or the civil war. In Vietnam class it was the same thing. He spent half the semester just setting the war up, talking about the Vietnamese struggle. I just wanted to talk about Rolling Thunder and what it was like to be in a firefight and shit.
>>
>>674942867
Oh yeah, lots of Spain and Portugal in general.
But Scandinavia, Russia and the like are totes interesting places. Sweden went from being a minor part of a personal union into THE power in the baltic sea untiil the end of the great northern war. (Oh yeah, I am a Swede by the way)

So you want the standard American propoganda version of history. The way in which history is told will always be subject to some bias as details are highlighted and others dismissed. Focusing on the struggles of American soldiers in Vietnam is to side with the state that commited the crime.

When describing world war 2, do we discuss the strength and valor of Fascist armies and honor their sacrifices or do we discuss their crimes and atrocities?

The fact is that the American perspective is a narrow sliver of the truth, especially when aggressors rarely comdemn or objectively recount their crimes.

Because the actual fighting of wars isn't important in history. What's important is cause and effect.
The natives of America is probably the largest example of mass genocide or human extinction.
The Civil War wasn't important so much as it was Reconstruction and the dominance of the Republican party following the war.
Vietnam War was more important for the Vietnamese than it was for the U.S., obviously.

A lot of history has been ruined by 1) social historians, who are more interested in the fluctuations of wheat prices than in great figures, and 2) SJWs, who want to make every story about the oppressed - meaning that they project today's obsessions with homosex, gender and race onto the past and spoil what's interesting about it.

This is a Vendel-era helmet from Sweden,
made up of decorated bronze plates and chainmail.

Vendel is the Swedish term for the period 550-800 CE. It's where most "viking" helmets come from, since there is only one viking-age helmet that's ever been found. They most likely looked something like this, but made of iron.

Telling history by holding States and Nations to the same standards is a fair act. You can keep your eyes glued to Rambo and pretend that America is a special snowflake. If you want bias, take a look at the inconsistent criticisms applied by Nations to similar situations. You can side with the aggressors and criminals every time, you can side with your own State every time, like a good little lapdog or you can side with the victims of criminal state action every time. Your choice.

What YOU think is interesting about it.

>great figures

What do you mean by this exactly? Great figures as in great people or great figures as in great numbers? If it is the former, I thoroughly disagree that history has been "ruined" by these people. Also the whole point you made about "muh SJWs" is silly,
studying history demands a solid theoretical framework, and what is modern is what is commonly used. This has always been changing, it gives the field much more accuracy and leads to interesting discoveries.

Tell me, are you an historian?

All that vapid discourse just bores me.
Reading about Sulla and Marius and the civil war between the plebs and the patricians is interesting. Reading about fluctuations in the the price of Egyptian wheat is not. Lease interesting is ignoring the great figures to focus on the hapless slaves who swept the floor.
It is not silly at all to grieve at the way SJWs have made their obsessions the only stories that ever get told. What was it like to be a sodomite in the Jacobean era? What was the role of viking women? Not in addition to the bigger stories, but as a substitute.

You have a valid opinion, however the more civilized among us prefer to maintain a consistent criticism of all powers and to remain critical even of the institutions we exist in. You have obviously chosen to adopt the perspective of your rulers, however unlike them you may be. It is fair enough but not something I envy. Every race, religion and creed has deserved some kind of judgement at many points throughout history, though I find your visceral reaction to the criticisms of your masters cute.

Again, this is what you think. Its just an opinion.
I find chinese history uninteresting, doesn't mean it isn't a worthwhile topic to study.

>the only stories that ever get told
Well this is simply not even a little true. Are you studying at a university where this is the case? I'm not.
Also almost all of history up until like the 80s focused on "great men". Which I think is dumb at some point, you shouldn't give a single individual too much power, it makes the history less objective.

Instead of looking at the day to day life of Charles XII of Sweden, portraying him as a heroic demigod, look at the reforms that took place to give the king more power, look at the nobility losing power to a new class of bureaucrats.

I really don't get why you care so much about other peoples scholarship. I m homosexuals in the Jacobite era say alot about the past society as a whole? What WAS the role of viking women? Did they have one? If someone finds this out, surely this is a good thing. Every single gap should be filled. I mean, its knowledge that can be used by others. It doesn't have to be interesting.

If someone asks a question, should we be satisfied in saying: "We don't know"?
Of course not, which is why I want to be an historian.

You hardly made a point. Your understanding of history will always be subject to moral bias by the decisions of those who tell the stories, by the details they emphasize or ignore. You may not care about "laws" but you cant possibly know the totality of any event. What you learn will have already been filtered by the source you choose when they highlight and emphasize certain points and undermine others. You can pretend to want truth as objectively as possible but you will never get that. You have already obviously chosen to accept the perspective and framework of the rulers and masters of our time. "SJW" is simply a name invented by servants of power to insult disseting opinions and undermine criticisms of their actions. Even to insult those who refuse to gloss and celebrate their myths.

Of course it is fool…obvsiouly what comes after a war is important, but who wins and loses, and how they ended up a victor or not is extrememly important. not to mention the technological innovation that is driven by conflict...
