Hey /b/rothers,
what are you studying and are you happy with your choice? pic not related
>>
>>674912345
lol at business studies being anything but not fit to wipe my arse tier
>>
Actuarial science, I am happy with the course, but the bureaucracy of the job sounds quite off putting as actuaries usually aren't given enough time to accurately process information and thus end up making potentially misinformed decisions.
>>
Studied communications, landed a job 3 months after graduation. Looking to move on in another 6 months to a better company, im doing alright

stupid classification made by some "lookatmeimanengineerXD" nerd in order to feel better. Otherwise god tier would be law, political science and medicine, since those are the most demanding studies
>>
>>674913955
What kind of jobs can you get with a maths degree?

Im thinking about studying medicine, but im scared to study for 12 years and basically throw away my twenties. Guys what should I do? I really like biology. Dutchfag btw

>>

If you can get in the program do it, you wont throw away your 20s when you can retire at 50
>>
>>674912345
Mathematics is not god tier - yes, works a lot of important things, but as career - no.
Law is definitely lower - incredibly dull and boring job, that only pays good.

Psychologi is about the same as mathematics, when guessing work is reduced and hardcore behavior/brain patterns are researched. Otherwise of course it is by far very inconsistent and a lot of guesswork.

computer sciences are good career and creative industry imo.

Music and history is definitely way up there. 1# Most profitable industry
2#if you learn history without becoming a history academian you will become a BY FAR more versitale person.
>>
>>674914202
I wanna be an investment banker, so I'd do an MBA after which I know I can do with a Math's degree.
On the other hand, I feel like why do a degree which is probably harder when I could just a business related one in the first place
>>
>>674914232
throwing away your twenties (not to mention you will be working 80+ hrs a week after) is the price of becoming a doctor

At least here in the UK, as long s you get a teaching degree to and a masters or MA to accompany it, anything can be Mid Tier. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Osbourne decided that he should cut pay to teachers so he can fill the back pockets of his MPs a little more. We're being bent over and fucked by a government that the majority didn't even vote for, all because the bank accounts of multi-millionaires are too small and the bank accounts of poor people are too large.

Eh, kids in most schools are already being taught that the only things worth doing are in Tech, hence why the only opportunities for apprenticeships or even jobs that come through schools are in Engineering or occasionally sport. Job security now, but when this generation of students grows up your job will be flooded with new applicants.

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osbourne, though all of his cuts to government and public sectors, is systematically making it impossible for anyone that wasn't raised in a rich household to get anywhere in life except through extreme luck. Our Tory overlords are forcing doctors and nurses to move to other countries and ruining the economy so that they can give more tax cuts to their favourite multi-national corporations.

Just finished my undergrad in physics and astronomy. I was doing research in a lab that works very closely with LIGO (the observatory that discovered/confirmed gravitational waves) at the time of their discovery. Was pretty awesome, and a great motivator to keep going. If I continue into a graduate program I'll continue this research.

While I am legitimately doing the stuff I dreamed of doing when I first started my undergrad, in order to make any money doing it I'll pretty much need a PhD. Sort of at a crossroads at the moment between wanting to "chase my dreams" and being overwhelmed by the staggering amount of academic work I'll need to do to get there. Overall I am pretty ambivalent, but happy I'd say.

Basically, the Tory's cut funding to local councils and the first people to be laid off were people who cleaned the streets, and in poor areas (the areas with most of the Tory constituents mind you) the streets became filthy because people were no longer employed to clean them. Then Cameron had the audacity to start a 'Clean for the Queen' day in these poorer areas, where he encouraged the poor and unemployed to clean up the streets he was responsible for making dirty in order to please the Queen, who wouldn't notice anyway. TL;DR: Cameron got a lot of people sacked, then encouraged them to do the same job for free.

It's a little bit of both.
It's not hardcore coding or hardcore math, but you have to be very very creative and also know how to deal with people to get your data and understand user experience.
It's not a job for geeks with lame social skills
>>

I am the poster above who just finished his undergrad. Does the school you go to have any research opportunities? Most bigger/state schools that offer astronomy as a major will. I reached a wall about a year and a half into my undergrad that felt very similar to what you are describing. Mostly I was doing all this seemingly arbitrary math and not really learning anything inspiring. I found out my school has a pretty known research lab and emailed the lab director directly and arranged a coffee date. Pretty much told him I am passionate about the actual work he is doing and have hit a wall in my day-to-day studies. He moved a mountain to get me into his lab (I was a sophomore at the time, most research applicants are seniors.) It was the greatest thing that ever happened to me. All of my classwork was so much easier to swallow because I was this badass research lab I was going to afterwards where I was going actual applicable science.

Check it out if you still like the idea of astrophysics but are struggling to get through the grind. It seems like adding on more work but it is such a good motivator. Plus it looks fucking great on any resume.
>>
>>674919692

Nuclear Engineering sounds very limiting, even if you will get a job in this field, you will be very limited. Changing a workplace will mean most likely moving to the other side of the country, or moving to a new country.

Study something that will make MANY companies want you and be able to hire you.
If you already study that, consider starting your career in management consulting like McKinsey, but only if you like it.

Depends why you want to do it. (I.e. Money or passion)

I was thinking about going into medicine, but zoology appealed more. I ended up studying venoms, now work on antivenin development and snakebite management. I get to help people, work towards solving a problem of epidemic scales in equatorial regions and I'd class myself as a medical professional and researcher. Plus I got to travel around S. America and S.E. Asia during my studies rather than clearing out bedpans and shit. If you can make your specialisation relevant to medicine, you can work your way into the industry.

Studying English in Scotland, and trust me there are a lot more job prospects than in most of the 'got tier' positions because it isn't theoretical and shows the ability to critically think about a great many problems. nearly everyone you find in the God Tier positions except medicine and maybe Physicsare absolute tards that only go to uni go get pissed and party, not to study. They know there aren't any jobs in it, but they don't care because they'll commit suicide because of how shit their lives are by the time they're 40 anyway.

these threads in general don't seem to realize that a huge percentage of middle income type entry level jobs from a huge range of fields only require a nonspecific "bachelors degree". I've seen hundreds of job postings like this. You have to argue that whatever degree you acquired will give you an advantage in whatever job it is.

lol, economics is a very broad and versatile degree, most of the people I've talked with work in a person to person environment, with a focus in business obviously, but people are always going to want to talk face to face to people.

What school? Doing Comp Sci now and memorization isn't really viable besides in certain first-second year courses.
Profs give us cheat sheets for the required memorization portion of our exams (they're not allowed to remove those sections) and then give us a proper exam after that.
>>
>>674926946
Ya true there, but I'm more considered with the part that science can't answer yet. Also I'm ass at science and I don't think I could succeed in neurology

depends what you wanna do, just the bachelors in philosophy probably won't get you that far, but there are markets for those degrees, but they are very limited and tight. Philosophy is a great starting degree and should be used more as a jump to other degrees rather than a standalone, as it teaches crucial skills that most other degrees don't teach, critical thinking being the major one everyone always loves to talk about.
>>
>>674927188
Hey thanks, I'm glad someone else thinks that is cool! On the question of it's hard to get a job without the Ph.D. , I think it would be. With a PH.D. I could do research work at a university and get paid for that well

you might wanna take a look at maybe business philosophy. I know it gets away from your main focus, but it will help be a nice fallback if it doesnt work out. Economics courses and business admin minors area always good with a philo degree. econ is basically the philosophy of business anyways.
>>
>>674927842

I was originally convinced to go for my teaching certificate for history/social studies during the end of my 11th grade year of high school. I committed to the idea during grade 12. After my first semester and during my second (now), I've decided that as much as I love history - I can't do that for the rest of my life.

So I'm going for my associate's in media paraprofessional (sound recording/producing, TV studio production, photography, etc.) and going to the NY Film Academy for acting for a year. I was originally going to study theatre but again, convinced otherwise.

if you wanna be really smart, if youre young, get into banking now, become a teller or somthing of that nature and get a degree in finance while working around their schedule. Work hard and move up their ladder, there is huge mobility within banking, USE THAT. Tell them your plans and what you want when you go for the interview, make it known you want to move up and are willing to move around in the company. I have a mate that is 26, started as a teller at 18, moved up, and is now making 110k without a degree, recently starting going to uni again, just with certificates, that they paid for.
>>
>>674929325
not true at all, find some nice non profits or gyms that you can start working out in and get hella big, then become a personal trainer and become an independent contractor type shit for helping people with diet exercise.
>>
>>674914232
If you want to do biology you need at least a master degree to find an appropriately paying job.
>>
>>674929325
I really doubt that. America (assuming that's where you live) will always need nutritionists considering how shit our diets have become.

Hey guys,

Biology Major Chemistry Minor here. I should be graduating in the Fall 2016. I have am currently enrolled in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Organic Chemistry along with Physics courses required for my degree.

I have been deciding what route I want to take after I complete school.

DAT (Dental), Medical School (MCAT), PHD (GRE), Pharmacy etc.

OR

I could jack off all day and not worry about anything.

But honestly, I've been struggling with the fact that when I transition into these bigger programs (if I get accepted) that I will fail due to all the competition [essentially people who are smarter than I am].

I can't make up my mind, and I am becoming my own worst enemy by procrastinating from my decision.

Money is not a problem as I am fortunate enough to have grandparents willing to put me through any program I choose.

I have connections in the Dental program (as my father is an Oral Surgeon [but deadbeat father, plus I hate teeth]), and my Uncle (not-related) is head of Nuerology at a distinguished medical school.

I just have no fucking clue what I want to do with my FUTURE.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I do Economics/business studies at high school this year which is my 12th year, next year i'll be going to uni but i only have access to Economics/business/humanities universities, (cuz no A-levels in scientific subjects) and i regret that because those degrees are fucking boring as fuck and i don't like those subjects.
Is it worth sacrificing a year getting my A-levels to do a biological sciences degree after ?
