It is one of the worst business models, the entire idea of a movie theater is terribly inefficient.
The theater gets less than %10 of the ticket price since the movies are basically on loan from the distributor.
Projectors are huge energy consumers and the expensive ass light bulbs burn out after a few hundred hours.
Those bulbs run whether there are 200 people watching the movie or 1.
Climate control on a room as large as a typical theater is an inefficient nightmare.
And remember, the theater company has very little ability to control their business flow since they have no control over when movies are released or how popular they are or how aggressively they are advertised.
It all combines to make running a theater such a huge cash waste that the only way they can be profitable is to have insane markups on the food they serve.
On a personal note, as a theater employee it really annoys me when people comment on the prices being high. No shit, they are? This is not a new phenomenon, Jerry Seinfeld was making jokes about this shit in the 90s.
