I haven't used any modern VR, but the reports of the screen door effect worries me. Like you, I've spent far too much money on high quality monitors. They're only just barely getting up to my standards (retina display, solid black levels, response and refresh well over 60 Hz), so I can only see VR as a step back in terms of visual quality.

I hope VR takes off. I really do, but I still have my doubts. People are putting their drinks on objects that aren't really there and spilling them, and finding out that they have to rearrange their room just to use VR. Plus there's the cost, but I know that will change through time. But if it doesn't take off in its early stages, people might disregard it like their Wii and stop playing with it as a whole which would be a devastating blow to the developers supporting VR.

That isn't VR. It's what would be called a stereoscope if the markers weren't bullshitting you. Even the best cell phones don't have the hardware to push the needed resolution and refresh rate, and its head tracking will be nauseating and practically unusable outside of gimmick demos.

The Occulus and Vive go for something like $400 and $800 and recommend a $400 video card. That's a GTX970 or equivalent:
