The church is not directly affiliated with the United States government in the sense of laws. While the prophet might have seen multiple presidents and even met the pope he cannot change anything. The only major affiliation I can think of is that North Korea often has farmers from Nephi (who are Mormon) visit and teach better agriculture to the people in that area so that Kim Jong Un doesn't completely cause a famine.
