It's not very good yet, but your approach is perfect man. I too dove into a DAW head first as a teenager without any knowledge of music or any proficiency on any instrument, and just felt around for months, even years learning how to piece together songs. I mean, I always had songs in my soul, and learning how to get them out literally changed my life completely. Now I'm super fussy and care a lot more about performance, as well as recording technique, mixing, mastering, etc. etc. but in the good old days of trial and error and I was probably the happiest. Nothing more joyful than figuring out how music works and how to make it work for you.

Not bad for a beginner. But your guitar playing sounds like a joke.

ty.
I recorded a friend playing random chords. I used a cheap, old mp3 player which records in mono only. With a distortion, so yeah.
He's also not a pro at playing guitar.

just turning knobs and messing around, watching tutorials and reading.

just like i told u man...
I'm a dj, and years ago downloaded a free Reason demo...
Started messing around with it and liked it so much, i began watching tutorials at youtube, googling for tutorials, how to make/produce music, etc etc...
Then downloaded Ableton's Live, and kept doing the same thing...
I watch/read stuff, then go to the softwares and apply what I've seen/heard/read.
There are TONS of info and tuts for beginners in google/youtube

also reading basic music theory, but mainly just messing around, experimenting turning knobs and stuff in the software I download

Well, you've got your heart in this song, OP. That's something special. But let me break this down how I hear it.
First of all, the song sounds like a draft of a real track. Not sure if this is supposed to be the finished product. It needs a lot of touching up, production wise.
Second, it sounds like your guitar is being recorded from across the room into a tiny microphone, then you're blasting the mix. You need to get closer to your mic/get a better mic, and then learn how to use a noise gate to reduce the static for a cleaner, more natural sound.
Third- Add more dynamic stuff. The song sounds the same for it's duration. Throw in some drum.guitar fills, bass lines, a dab'll do ya here and there.
Papa Bless
Download home recording for musicians for dummies. And mastering music the art and the science. The Haas effect can help you separate tracks with a three repetition delay. If you have a mono track you can always duplicate it and pan one left one right. Always bus your tracks to a separate reverb aux, and pan the reverb to the opposite side than the he original ( if your original track is panned slightly left pan the reverb slightly right). I've been fumbling with a daw for over a decade.
And for the record a noise gate will not fix a noisy track. It will just mute the track when it gets to noisy. If you want a good track make sure you get it the first time. Don't expect a post production effect to fix an engineering fuck up.

ty heaps anon!
its like a draft, yeah.
Thats the only stuff I do: drafts. Then save them, create a new one and never touch them again. Lol.
And yes, the guitar is crap. Like I said, i used an OLD, mp3 player that records voice on mono.
It distorts a lot even when i was far from the guitar.
I def need a better mic.
But then again, this is just production for fun/practice.
>Third- Add more dynamic stuff. The song sounds the same for it's duration. Throw in some drum.guitar fills, bass lines, a dab'll do ya here and there.
I know... im not a musician so huge fail on that part, idk.
It changes when bassline comes in at 1:00 but it def needs to change more.
