The poorer people who can't afford Vancouver move out there, so now the developers are building apartments that are still pretty expensive and they are often bought in bulk by investors who rent them out and put them back on the market for 100k+ what they bought them for.

Eh it's a nice area for sure. My mom lives in East Van pretty close to main street. There are definitely decent places in East van and it's not cheap either. I have a nice decent sized apartment here though. I like Coal Harbour as opposed to the other places in downtown because it's just quiet here. I hate the loud traffic, partying, and screaming and drunken assholes more around Granville and central downtown. I wouldn't even consider my family wealthy and ironically we owe a lot of it to Chinese people. In the 90's my dad bought a big piece of property in the west side for cheap and built a house on it, fast forward 10 years it's worth a few million so I can't really complain about the real estate situation when I've prospered from it. Still, I don't think it's right and eventually maybe in the next 3-5 years I will leave the country when I'm done my education.
