I recently had a similar conversation with two friends. The idea was that it would be useful if germany would introduce english as an official language. Having every street sign in english, every official document in english and investing more ressources in teaching people in germany how to speak english would not only help to strengthen our international chances of coorperation, but it would make stuff like the immigration crisis easier to handle. Speaking multiple languages is always a chance to coorperate better with foreigners. It has so many advantages. Of course it would be best if everybody on the world just spoke the same language, but thats not realistic for the next few generations.

Older people can still fall back to the normal german language. The english language should complement german, not replace it. A language is always an important part of a culture and even though i manage to speak somewhat acceptable english I love the german language and it's capabilities. Introducing english as an official second language is nothing our elderly will profit from, but it builds the infrastructure our kids and every foreigner visiting our country may find handy.
Bonus point: If everything is both english and german and people already know the english part, they can learn some german that way.
