1) they aren't that common. They exist, but if you only spent time on 4chan you would think that flurries, bronies and traps were like REALLY common, at least as common as something like people who like anime or whatever. They simy aren't. Yes, there are traps, flurries and bronies, but they aren't very common. Similarly people with these extremely weird gender identities are not very common either. Straight, gay, and bisexual are fairly common with transgendered people less so and things like "demisexual plantkin" being common only because 4chan users sort through a lot of bullshit to find the good stuff.

2) the internet has provided a place for these uncommon people to get together. Since they are such a small community they tend to stick to the largest sites such as Tumblr. Thus you see them more because they have concentrated themselves on a site that draws ridicule.

3) I think that a lot of these people are a little insane and would hide that in the past. With the advent of easy online anonymity they can admit these crazy ideations.

4) I think that at least a third or more of these people are trolls with no actual followers or whatever, just shell accounts left by some edgelord to make fun of a certain movement which was abandoned but still serves as "proof" of the new and crazy genders. Like someone from 4chan who wanted to be an ass made an account about a "fictionkin plantkin genderfluid demisexual pansexual asexual fictionsexual amourphous who identifies as a crossword puzzle sexually"

It's a trend. Every generation needs to find something to make them feel unique. Since they are not inherently creative enough to actually BE unique - they jump aboard the easiest bandwagon and conform to that "non-conformist" thing that makes them feel like a special snowflake. It's been going on forever, from goths to grungefags, from punk wannabes to hipster beards. From drinking IPAs to getting a tribal tattoo wrapped around your arm. It's all obvious tryhardism. Transgender identification is nothing more than kids wanting to feel special. They'll get over it, our grandparents got over being punk-ass kids and so did our parents, these faggots will too.
