Serious question, /b/: do I have an alcohol problem of I get wasted danm near every night but still manage to get to work on time, have the coffee pot ready, be a great coworker, and get my laundry done? I drink like an 8th of a bottle of Jack with a couple IPAs a night but still function in the morning without any problems. Gif unrelated.
>>
>>673536942
Depends if you're working for your next drink or drinking 'til you next work.
>>
>>673536942
Yes
>>
I'd say yes, sounds like you couldn't effortlessly choose to do something else apart from drinking tonight. Having coffee every day isn't good either. Getting your laundry done and getting through work aren't achievements, what about the part of the day where you have a life?
>>
>8th of a bottle of Jack with a couple IPAs
thats like 2 and a half shots and a couple beers
that gets you wasted?

and if you're drinking half a fifth a night, you have a problem, if you're drinking like 4 or 5 a night, you're fine, at least by my standards
>>
>>673536942
your stomach hates you. you sound like an old friend of mine. drinks every night after work yet still functions during the day sober.

i dunno, go to the gym or something instead. smoke weed. lol
>>
>>673536942
Doesn't sound like a problem.
>>
>>673536942
You do have a problem because you are worrying about it.
>>
>>673537983
In the long term it can fuck with the liver though
>>
>>673536942
I do the same OP. It's a problem. I just feel better when I don't drink, but I'll be damned if there's anything better to do in this back water suburb.
>>
>>673536942
>functional alcoholic

Yes you have a problem. The fact that you're wondering about it is a good sign. Your organs will thank you for it one day.
>>
>>673536942
doesn't sound like a problem, like other anon said but don't overdo it because once you will get too used to your current amount, you will drink more, and more eventually leading to the point where even you will be too drunk to do anything, not to mention attending work.
>>
Op here. I have a project car I work on too in my free time. I live by myself, I know, pitiful, but I was never a people person. It's just hard to put point where I'm at becuase my work does alcohol awareness training so often. I go out with my friends, I work on my car, I work from home, I take care of my border collie, but drinking is the only thing that slows my anxiety down. Can someone be a true "functioning alcoholic"?
>>
>>673536942
yes, you have a problem.
stop before it destroys you.
>>
>>673538554
>don't overdo it
>>673536942
>I get wasted danm near every night

That's overdoing it.
>>
>>673538574
yes. you will be a functioning alcoholic until something bad happens and you increase your dose. then you will simply be a classic alcoholic.
>>
>>673536942
Yes, you have a problem.

Be sure to taper off slowly, or best even - seek professional medical help in doing it - because if you quit cold turkey it can fuck up your nerves or sth. (look up 'kindling')

Just to clarify, I don't mean seek a therapist, I really mean get legitimate medical advice about the physically healthiest way to stop drinking.
>>
If you have to ask if your alcohol is a problem, it is a problem.
>>
>>673538416
Best advice I ever got was to take one day off from drinking every week. For me (I almost never drink anymore) it was Saturday night. I called it "amateur night" and decided it was beneath a professional drinker to drink when everyone else was doing it. Fuck other people. But taking off one night a week will help you take a look around and see where you are at. Can you get to sleep? Does it affect your appetite? If everything seems OK, then you can get back on the horse and ride.
>>
>>673538574
>I live by myself, I know, pitiful

That's not pitiful. Sounds like you're doing alright, but you need a better way to deal with the anxiety. Really.

You're putting thought into it, so it's a good start man.
>>
>>673536942
I used to drink a 5th a day. You don't have a problem.....yet
>>
>>673536942
Thats not even enough to get drunk op is just looking for attention
>>
>>673536942
Lol my dad got pancreatitis from drinking every night. If you want problems, go ahead
>>
Man, you all are really insightful. I thought I was ok, becuase I had hobbies, never got in trouble(dwi/dui), and still took care of my chores living by myself with a pet. But I'll take your advice and seek someone to talk to about all this. I was worried becuase the alcoholics that I've talked to said, they were "functioning" and still took care of their families and children but we're absolute wrecks when they would drink. So, naturally I was curios where I stood.
>>
>>673538917
Pretty good advice. I always kept in mind also that the liver needs at least three days clean to recover from a night of boozing. So, starting at one clean night, aiming for 3 is a good start. Then take it from there if you can.
>>
>>673539327
Yes, the thing is functioning alcoholics are still putting their bodies through hell. It really is a harsh killer. It just doesn't show til you're in a dire state.

Good for you for trying to get on top of it tho.
>>
>>673538987
This was the start of my possible problem. I would not eat almost all day so after three or so shots of Jager or Jack, I'd be buzzed and then the beers would keep me riding while I played video games or played with my dog. Saving money, losing weight. I thought it was a win-win.
>>
Slippery slope. Stop now before you have gout, vitreous floaters, high blood pressure, gastritis, panic attacks, depression. You're not drinking v that much, but it could sneak up on you. You don't need it to be happy
>>
>>673536942
Op if there's the only thing you do why stop it we all gonna die of something and I bet u won't die cause drinking, when better times come u may quit it until then enjoy yourself
>>
>>673539743
Let me come clean, I'm in the military and we are constantly bombarded with alcohol abuse seminars. I think I'm ok, I have days where I don't want to be drunk at all and days where I want to get wasted and sleep like a rock.but all this can be scary when your career is on the line. Now I don't drink on duty or watch, but I'm confused and I don't want to be pegged in some database as an alcoholic or someone that seeked treatment. Idk /b/ my drinking hasn't changed in four years but for some reason, lately I've been worried. And this has been coming from a "Sailor of the Quarter" recipient.
>>
>>673540432
Look, you sound like you got your head on right. A lot of the advice here is pretty solid. You probably don't need a medical opinion or to go on the record to realise that you need to cut back.

Think it through, and find another way to deal with the anxiety.
>>
>>673540897
I think I just need another hobby. I exercise every other day, I have my dog, my car, and my house, but I still sit at my computer and can't calm down. I have trouble staying awake in the day, hence the coffee, and at night, I'm too anxious to go to bed. But in scared to go to medical becuase in a swift pen stroke they can end my career and I KNOW I'm a shit-hot sailor, it wouldn't be fair.
>>
>>673539743
NO.
Fuck this advice.
This is BULLSHIT.

Alcohol may be legal, and it's high may be familiar and predictable for everyone (PRO TIP THE TWO R RELADED XD), but it's one of the hardest drugs when it comes to how it slowly eats away your brain and your vital organs.

OP: google 'healthy ways to cope with stress' (cf. unhealthy ways)

Whatever you do, get off alcohol and don't get on cigarettes.

Find more friends, do something new, get a different perspective on life.
>>
>>673541312
You're right it wouldn't be fair. But servicemen have problems too, is it really such a dent in your career to talk to someone about it?

A new hobby might just be the ticket. As a sailor, rum's out, but you still got sodomy and the lash!

>Alcohol may be legal, and it's high may be familiar and predictable for everyone (PRO TIP THE TWO R RELADED XD), but it's one of the hardest drugs when it comes to how it slowly eats away your brain and your vital organs

Yeah, i think most of us here are in agreement there anyway.

you are, but if you can function normally nobody will give a shit, unless you hit your wife or something, my wife dont let me beat her when im drunk, so i just hit her while im high
>>
>>673536942
If you have to question yourself then yes you do
>>
>>673536942
That is called being a functional alcoholic
>>
See, you all are real people with real input. As much as it pains me to tell my parents (I'm not a loser, they're just ALWAYS, there for me and I don't have friends) I might have problem. I love this country and I want to be a part of maintaining freedom and I feel like shit that after a long day, I get so drunk I just pass out to fall asleep. But anyone can understand that me not having any problems related to drinking, causes me to think I don't have a drinking problem.
>>
>>673536942
its going to impair your ability to learn socially, mentally etc and this time in 5 years your going to be 3 years behind where other non drinkers your age are
>>
Most alcoholics are "functional" as you claim to be so you still very well may have a problem even though you are a functional employee
>>
I would say you have a problem bro but if your young enjoy it while you can because once you have a girlfriend that stuff ends
>>
>>673542610
It's just hard becuase a little alcohol makes me a superhuman. People say I'm friendly, funny, kind, and that's a lot from someone that only knows work. I wish I could make friends easier or have a girlfriend, but I can't cut it.
>>
>>673543111
i think you'll find it easier with a 100% functioning brain. not being mean just spilling my truth
>>
>>673542519
Try learning to cook. Like properly cook fancy shit. It'll occupy and focus your mind, give you something to do with your hands and it'll serve you well in the long run.
>>
>>673542879
That's why I want to "prepare". I went from school to teaching becuase of a "glitch" and from hearing from other first classes, it's fucking strict overseas with alcohol. I want to be an officer soon and I don't want to fuck this up. I want my future children to be so, so proud of me. More and more as they get older and realize how much I put it.
>>
>>673543551
That actually sounds like fun! I got into cooking good eggs when I I was cutting fat and I can see that really taking up my time in a good way.
>>
>>673543111
The problem is it's like any other substance it makes you settle for less. I can't say if your alcoholic or not but if you're drinking because you're unhappy the only way you're going to fix it is to be sober and to make changes in your life, you can't do that when you're drunk all the time.
>>
>>673543909
Excellent. Fuckin go for it man. You'll have another skill and some decent braggin rights if you learn to pull off a few good dishes. It's always a bonus too when it comes to future friends/girlfriends.
>>
Op here, you guys are making me cry as to how nice you are being. You don't know me but you care in some sense that you want to see me better. I can't stand this board, Porn, rekt threads, YLYL, and when I come to a problem, people who I don't know encourage me to just talk to someone or take up cooking. You're all angles weather you look up cp or not. Monday Im going to seek out a little help and advice. You'll never understand how down I feel about my problem and also being part of the US Navy. I love you all so much.
>>
>>673536942
At least you acknowledge the problem
>>
>>673544681
I know. We're not all typical /b/tards. I'm glad i could help, even just a little.
>>
Again I just want to say thank you. I can take a tiny "self-referred" hit (if any) looking for help instead of the struggle of trying to go from enlisted to officer with a dui. I would never drive drunk but one can't be too sure when you drink like I do.
>>
>>673545872
True. Good luck, navyanon.
