Iconic does not necessarily mean good. I enjoy them and recognize their place in music history. But, c'mon, their lyrics are objectively shit, and there are/were bands that were much better musically.

triiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiips
>>
>>673528499
their lyrics are not supposed to mean anything, that's the whole point.

Cobain told Spin in 1993 that he "didn't give a flying fuck" what the lyrics on Bleach were about, figuring "Let's just scream some negative lyrics and as long as they're not sexist and don't get too embarrassing it'll be okay"

Music is not always about what you hear, for the most part it is about what you feel.

Take the lyrics to In Bloom, it is basically a response to your post.
>>
>>673528083
I have a lot of respect for kurt and nirvana growing up in the 90s but come on...way over rated. elliott smith was a much better lyricist and song writer.

>>

>>
>>673528083
Power chords and a verse-chorus-verse structure with lyrics that sound like they were written by a whiny narcissist on heroin. Nirvana is painfully mediocre. I grew up loving them too, but as a decent guitarist and a reader of actual poetry, I cannot justify calling them the best of anything.
>>
>>673528083
Because they aren't out there.
>>
>>673530207
Oh my god, you are so special snowflake. You don't like them because their music had a simple structure and music with no ultra complicated technical guitar skills, sweep picking and all that fancy shit is simply unlistenable garbage, right?

My god. People really need to go and get a fucking brain. Too many good song/melody writers failed because of narrow-minded-progmetalonly fedoras. If the shit sounds good, it is good. I fucking love complicated guitar riffs by Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin (yeah, I know they also used a lot of power chords) but come the fuck on guys.

>>673531136
I'm not the guy you responded to, but I've never understood this argument. No, complexity is not necessary for greatness. Sure. But a certain amount of complexity would be a result of being even decent. Nirvana's instrumentals and style were both absolute beginner level. I learned every nirvana song a week after picking up guitar. I could play them all cleanly after a month. It's just shit. If they deserve to be heralded as the best, then we should put every ten year old's refrigerator drawings in a museum.
>>
>>673528699
True but only the edgy 14 year olds on b think Nirvana suck.

And see, that's only your opinion. It's shit because it's simple. Go and tell this shit to a minimalist artists who are considered great all over the world. You are fedoring the fuck out right now buddy. And I highly doubt that you've managed to learn all the nirvana songs in a week. And by 'all' you probably meant the Nevermind album only, because Bleach or Incesticide had solos that are hard as fuck to copy.

The guy wrote some excellent rock songs, had an interesting personality, but was overrated and he knew it.

Too bad it was the beginning of the end of rock music.

No band since has exploded they did.

You edgy teens dont seem to understand what music is about then. If you wanna listen to some tough shit all the time youd be listening to etudes and shit peformed by a 6 year old asian boy
But that shit doesnt envoke any emotion its just sound its hard its impressive but music is about how it makes you feel
Just listen to 'in bloom' and youll see kurt actually adressed this
>>
>>673532891
Playing power chords wasn't new. Having basic song structure wasn't new. Their aesthetics and shitty "grunge" vocals were.
>>
>>673532650
It's not about the skills. You can be a fucking guitar god and never get out of your bedroom if you don't have the right image/personality/characteristic traits, that are as important as actual music skills in the industry. And there's a shitload of classical guitar players like the bald guy. And besides their good guitar skills they have nothing to offer. Example - Tencious D. Kyle Gass is the shit. He's a good classical guitar player, but he would be nothing without Jack Black and his charisma.
>>
>>673532935
Not denying Nirvana didn't write good music, but the beauty of subjectivity is go fuck yourself.
>>
>>673532935
People enjoy music that doesn't make them respond emotionally, or does so for stupid reasons. What's wrong with that?
>>
>>673533094

soundgarden and alice in chains were better, nirvana was accessible and had dave grohl
>>

>>
>>673533094
So if Kurt Cobain wasn't charismatic enough and wasn't successful in the industry, you wouldn't like his music?
>>
>>673533260
soundgardens music is too down for me and alice in chains I think sounds more metal than grunge. As grunge bands I like Nirvana over AIC and Soundgarden but as bands on a whole I can see how people prefer them over Nirvana.

layne staley best vocalist and jerry cantrell is way underrated as a guitarist
>>
>>673532546
This
They exploded like they did because it was time for a change, the 70's had hippies, the 80's had yuppies, the 90's had grunge, look at some of the big 90's artist, nirvana, marilyn manson, alice in chains, i could go on forever
>>
>>673533380
If he wasn't as charismatic as he was I probably wouldn't like the music as much as I do, because it's the charisma that was a huge part of the sound. And why would I dislike an underground band? Nirvana was underground for the most part in their career. The went mainstream in 1991 and strated playing around 1987. I simply tried to picture a few things that when combined, can make you famous.

Thing I like about Nirvana is that they can go from really agressive songs like "Tourettes" to calm and deep songs like "Something In The Way" also find a way to mix calm and agressive like with "Heart-Shaped Box"

ITT: edgy teens shouting at each other's music preferences
>>
>>673533389
it all comes down to preference, i was submerged in nirvana as a child by my elder siblings so they were totally played out by the time i hit the normal "nirvana phase".

soundgarden were trippy as fuck and super nihilistic, alice in chains is some of the most brutally honest shit iv ever heard.

soundgarden would be my favorite, but its all good.....pear jam a distant fourth from that scene
>>
>>673533746
How could you not expect to see this on /b/?
>>
>>673533260
Alice in chains fucking sucks dude they just tried to hop on the seattle scene but sounded like montanna
>>
>>673533580
layne and chris were both equal but different in my view.

ditto kim and layne

jerry cantrell is a riff machine but ben shepherd and matt cameron all write for soundgarden as well as chris and kim.

its all good shit though really.

Nirvana is special because of how they transformed popular music. The shift was from "cock rock" to "alternative". Nirvana was the agent of change.

That's why they're so respected.
>>
>>673534414

also the squeeking sound heard during the middle of "Drain You" is a rubber duck that Kurt brought to the recording. It can also be seen on the back of the album!
