I'm not the guy you responded to, but I've never understood this argument. No, complexity is not necessary for greatness. Sure. But a certain amount of complexity would be a result of being even decent. Nirvana's instrumentals and style were both absolute beginner level. I learned every nirvana song a week after picking up guitar. I could play them all cleanly after a month. It's just shit. If they deserve to be heralded as the best, then we should put every ten year old's refrigerator drawings in a museum.

soundgardens music is too down for me and alice in chains I think sounds more metal than grunge. As grunge bands I like Nirvana over AIC and Soundgarden but as bands on a whole I can see how people prefer them over Nirvana.

Nirvana was underground for the most part in their career. The went mainstream in 1991 and strated playing around 1987.
