Not trying to be a heretic here, but how do these Space Marine shoulder pads work? Assuming these things are made out of a solid matter and have no hidden hinges or telescopic edges on them, shouldn't they go inside your neck and shoulders if you lift your arms to the sides or raise them up all the way?

Only logical explanation I can think of is that there's a hidden mechanical system underneath the pauldrons that moves them above the shoulders when you lift your arms to certain angles, exposing your arms almost entirely. Not really practical or safe, but plausible, I guess.

Or maybe it's just inexplicable space magic that can't be explained.

Your troops are space marines so they're hard as nails and loyal to the imperium. Blood Angels have special rules and a long back story that basically mean they will occasionally go completely fucking berzerk. They work really well in close combat because of this.

Vampire Space Marines. Like normal marines but extra-killer in close combat. Special unit configerations like Death Company, close combat tanks and dreadnoughts reflect that. Some good named hero characters with different abilities, a few like Dante are even worth the points they cost to field.

Their main weakness, or at least in 4th edition, was their tendancy to go nuts and charge off out of your control, and a skilled mobile player can lead them round the board and shoot them to pieces. But then properly handled they'll turn an opposing player's army into pulled pork.

To answer OP, the shoulder guards are described as "autoreactive" in the books and move automatically to get out of the way a bit. Also, look at suits of real Medieval armor, the pauldron was pretty fucking big, going down almost to the elbow.

Starcraft is actually a ripoff of 40K, not the other way around. The first full 40K codexes cane out in like 91 with the forerunner game called Rogue Trainer dating back to 89. Starcraft came out in 1997.

That Ultramarines movie was dogshit. GW was dumb enough to get the faggots that make Bionicle to make the movie. The cut scenes for THQ's 40K games are infinitely better. Dan Abnett supposedly wrote the script but I get the idea there were some major rewrites by some douche bags once production started. "That will be kinda hard to animate, why don't we cut some corners here and here, remove this character entirely, and inexplicably place the ship's reclusiam in the engine compartment hurr durr..."
GW will likely never greenlight a fullscale live action 40K movie because they are far to miserly with the revenue from their properties and wouldn't share profits with a major studio that would do it justice.

A good question anon. The pauldrons on mk3 armor and better are attached via a black carapace which is a dermal implant in the marines
There are servo's in all the "moving joint" parts of the armor, the pauldrons included. These enhance movements, so to answer, Yes, there is a hidden mechanism that reacts to his lifting arms, twisting etc that stops them being a hindrance

And to answer your other question, Yes, this exposes the joint in the arm pit at certain angles, but the ribbing of the under-carapace is almost as tough as the armor itself

It's the same ribbing you can see between all the joints
