From an artist's standpoint, its about design. Yeah, if you want horrific monsters, gross is an option.
But unique, creative monsters are what I'm looking for. One where a lot of thought was put into the design. Not just some creepy clown with fuckin a heart in his hand and sharp teeth or some shit.
The earlier pictures of this thread were pretty good. But as an artist, a GOOD monster isn't one that goes off of gore to make it horrific.
A good monster makes you wonder more about it. Makes you feel uneasy. Makes you feel there is something inherently wrong with the monster...
Whether that's obvious or not, is the question.
(And the scary science to gore, is simply your brain going "whoa that stuff is supposed to be inside me not outside" and that's what makes gorey monsters scary. Because our insides are our insides for a reason.)

Enigma at Amigawara Fault(?) is a more known one by westerner's. The movie he had done is really good too. He's by far my favorite horror comic/manga/story creator.
