Well, the historical (not biblical) Jesus was born a few years before 0 AD, but since it has been the standard year of counting of the Western world for a millenia and a half, there is no need to get a new one for us atheists. Besides, what would we choose to count from? The year of Hypathia's birth, or Darwin's? Maybe Hitchens' or Dawkins'? Hardly. Religious events are usually the starting year of many of the world's calendars. Muslims count from the year of Mohammed's birth, the Chinese count from, well something. North Korea even counts from the birthyear of fucking Kim-Il Sung. And by atheists, I suppose you mean atheists from western countries, where the biblical calendar is the standard one. It's more a matter of what country you're from and what sort of calendar is the most widely used there, really.

They don't. Jesus birth (if it ever happened at all) is commonly dated to around 5 or 6 BC.
And why don't atheists protest against counting the years in some connection with Jesus at all?
Because it works fine and changing the count of years always is a huge mess.
Also, it is nothing new to base the date around a mythological event. The ancient romans counted from the mythological founding of Rome, although they knew that the story was made up...

Atheists are probably the smartest people alive on earth. They don't believe in a God because how could a God make something like 4chan and rent threads? Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, they all have one thing in common they count the years from Jesus's death because how the he'll else can we count when we don't even know what fucking year humanity started to record time? Its wierd to me that actually think this is what we do though. Its well established that no one knows when jesus was or wasnt born, it cant be the basis of the calendar. To keep a clean continuity of timy keeping we have a year zero and the transition from CE in BCE periods, and the whole thing to the present moment is currently the holocene era. This is attend 4th grade or spend 3 monutes on wikipedia level knowledge.
