It depends, you could call yourself an alcoholic if you just had a problem with alcohol. But your problem is that you're "addicted" to alcohol, or "addicted" to drugs. In all sense you're an addict, but it depends which 12 step group you attend, if you do at all. Both fellowships look down up the "addict/alcoholic" combo.

it might be scary to get up on your feet and start working towards fixing things but in the ever-wise words of bill murray, "baby steps."
As soon as you start seeing progress in your life it'll get ten times easier to keep drinking for the weekends or for social outings.

I attend AA but my DOC was benzo's and weed. Alcohol only came when I ran out and had no other way to get fucked. Honestly though I don't worry to much about little shit like that man. Who gives a shit?

My childhood
At a very young age I seen my parents drink and smoke pot. They would fight almost everyday. I never had a permanent place I could call home we would Move every few months cuz of there drinking/drug. As a kid I was homeless sleeping in a car/ camp ground/ hotel.motel

kyle here, I'm post 392 as well. the shit of it is they legitimately used to use lsd medically for alcoholism and depression.
tbh, I've really got no intention of quitting it. i make sure to use it sparingly/productively and not abuse it. on top of that i take l-tyrosine, 5htp, and magnesium taurate to offset most of the side effects.
the perks of it greatly outweigh the cons for me. the comedown is pretty depressing, but the things you accomplish while on it make the depression seem like a joke.
however, i will say that i like it way more than i feel comfortable admitting to.

I went to the doctor for a sore throat about a year ago my blood pressure was high, ran an ekg on me. Said I had heart damage then sent me to a heart specialist when the results came in I didn't even read them. I've been hitting the gym for about two years. But about eight months ago I decided to quit and work on my heart and lungs.
I can run about three miles. I figure in the summer I'll get a physical and see how I'm doing.
The debate of how it happens aside, there comes a point, after enough abuse, that it changes from drinking because -insert whathaveyou- to drinking to drink, and reasons for it fill in afterward (or in more likely in anticipation for it). A tipping point where the thirst moves to a more basic part of your brain, that happens before conscious thought.

The one thing that really helped me to quit was Joe and Charlie Big Book Studies or such. Basically, an AA meeting in mp3 format that is listen to while commuting to and from work. I still enjoy it from time to time. Anyone that has ever seriously considered AA but wished there was a micro step before going to a meeting should really look into it.

instead of hitting the bottle as soon as you get home try and eek out a few pushups or go for a jog. or if you're not up for that just look at it as a challenge for yourself against the part of you that you dislike.
but yeah, just know that you're only as helpess as you're willing to believe. and the one thing that will get you anywhere in life is realizing that your circumstances are a result of your actions (or lack there of.) self accountability is key.
