The basis for these characters is a human body that, since it is drawn can be as flawless as wanted. Then, things inspired by other lifeforms (real or imaginary) are added, in order to combine the best aesthetics of the donor-specieces without keeping their downsides.
But why not just take a normal human and draw that? Well, the changed attributes also make for an exotic appeal. In addition the different facial anatomy prevents the flat-face problems so often found in anime/ hentai, and makes the faces more expressive (facial expression is a very complicated matter that, without either insane detail or immense overexaggeration, doesn't work out too well )
