The 90's was when Plastikman's live shows were actually live, Ectomorph used to truck in racks full of gear to play live, I did a show in Michigan with Skylab2000 and he had a live rig playing from the roof of a fuckin Honda motorcycle dealership... in fact everybody playing out live brought a real live rig and actually played their music. They didn't just sit there bobbing their head behind a laptop running Ableton.

Shit was cash back then. The vibe was dope as fuck and the people were cool as shit.

In the 90's, live shows used to consist of the artist behind a shitton of keyboards, drum machines, and a hardware sequencer. A lot of shit was done completely on the fly too, so for example Plastikman would program his 909, 303's, 202, and whatnot completely on the fly making shit up as he went along and had a sequencer with a few building blocks of track to play back but the bulk of his shit was completely live. Ectomorph and Anthony Rother would have these massive rigs with all sorts of instruments and they would run between all the machines to make the music happen. It was definitely harder to do back then. Shit, the handful of live shows I did back then was rough managing a pair of Roland R8 drum machines (R8 w/Electronic card and R8mkII), Sequential Multi Trak using all 6 outputs each running into guitar pedals and rack effects and it's onboard sequencer running, a pair of Korg Poly 800-II's, and an Alesis MMT8 sequencer tying it all together PLUS I was alternating between all of that and the turntables (vinyl, this was pre-Final Scratch/Serato).

Ableton makes it easy to do live shows nowadays.

I've never actually been to a real, legal venue. Abandoned warehouses and empty woods are brilliant places to rave. Me and my friends all organize raves in our area, and we have all our own stuff, all our own music, lights, décor, and transport, and indeed: a drug-dealer level burner phone to give people directions. Dude in your pic is insane, but I suppose the music was also simpler back then, and I guess easier to do on the go. You must have been mega twisted to make sense of all of that hardware at the time. It's definitely still possible to do interesting live shows without just relying on a computer, but it definitely depends how hard you wanna go. Also I wish I could pick up a 303. I'd never stop playing with it if I could afford it. Ever seen anyone do a live analog synth set? Using a machine that doesn't even really make music...To try to make music. It's like it's all totally possible, just as it was in the 90's, but I guess it's just easier for people to buy a stamp at a venue and dance knowing they won't get raided, which I understand. But still, it takes away a crucial element. If people want to complain about raving today, I think they should be the change they want to see! kek its all good fun but fuck me it's actually pretty hard work. We're looking at getting an actual fixed venue for next year - wanna do a festival. The biggest obstacle with stuff like this is the toilet system. If you want to do an actual event, you have to have x toilets per x square meters of land or they shut you right down.
