Gotta vote for 2007 runescape.
Entirely feasible to get membership through in-game cash, and sustain it just through playing the game normally.

Fun, interesting quests, unlike basically every other mmo, but also it means levelling for the most part is more grindy.

Failing that, as >>660695815 said, WoW was pretty fun. Though I only ever played on a friends account and I'd seriously reccomend a friend to play it with.

grab a friend, get GW2 (you no longer have to buy it to play, expansion content still costs though) which has cool party content once you made it through the overly boring low lvls

if you like shooters, grab a friend and give FireFall a try, still not really sure why I dropped it, Devs were constantly updating and improving the game until i stopped playing it

TERA amazing combat system but performance issues

Dungeons and Dragons Online probably has onne of the best active combat systems and the most robust character development systems of any game currently. The graphics are somewhat dated. It has very good PVE...but slim to nil PVP. It also doesn't have lazy ass NPC's who send you into the wilderness to collect 20 yellow spotted Lillys.

swtor has the absolute worst f2p experience. the restrictions they put on you are insane. 2 quickbars max, 200-350k credit cap (endgame, you can make that in 10 min) and lets not forget that new xpac content can only be accessed if you subscribe.

I still play SWTOR, but I pay for a sub, so I can actually enjoy the endgame content.

A few years ago, I discovered a game called Perfect World... It was a fun game until you tried to go into endgame, where if you wanted to actually be "good" you had to pour TONS of cash into micro transactions. Then I discovered private servers for the same game. It was, again, fun, but the only real problem I had was that the only endgame content was pvp, I enjoy SOME pvp, but when that's all there is, I get bored WAY too quick.
