Could be that a lot more people simply accept sexual desires they would repress in the past.

One explanation is that it comes from a lack of father presence during the sexual devellopement of the child, about 7 -10 yo.
Child is supposed to get love from his mother. When he grows about 7 he realise's that his mother's love also go to his father which create oedipe complex. And this conflict normally ends up by the child getting to know his father and wanting to become like him.
But if the child lacks of a strong father presence, his mother will try to compensate it and take the father's place to the eyes of the child. But the child realize that his mother lacks strengh. He will then try to incarn his mother but symbol of man power, penis. So crossdressing, traps etc.
That's a theory though.
