I had CnC for the 64 as well. Company of heros is a good example of whats happened to RTS in the past decade, they all went away from base building and resource gathering. Which is fine, I love Men of War AS2, but I prefer that old time RTS.
Also I forgot to say, no I never played Total Annihilation.

If you want a real challenge, give theater of war and hearts of iron series a try.
