When you do eventually get a chance at an apartment DO NOT settle on a roommate you know will be shit cause that will screw you hard. If you get anything for free or insanely cheap from craigslist(smartest option) bring a weapon and tell someone anyone who you can trust to report you missing where you went. A lot of people have chosen the military in situations like you described. It's not unheard of. But I'll caution you by saying that the military sucks most of the time, but at least your life won't be the only life spent in smelly shitholes or rusty bilges. There are pros and cons that YOU must weigh before signing your life away but I will say that the benefits far outweigh the bad in this case.

I was an 18 year old faced with a similar situation 20 years ago. I didn't have any plans after high school, couldn't get a scholarship, didn't have the money to put myself through college, and neither of my parents who were divorced at the time were interested in helping me. I wasn't being kicked out, but I hated the idea of living with my father, under his roof, following his rules. So I didn't want to stay at home.

So I joined the navy, after having been in army jrotc throughout high school. I took the asvab, scored very well, I went in as an E-3/AT (avionics tech), was quickly advanced to E-4/AT-3, did 6 years total, got out and went to a well known tech school, got my EE-T, and now I make 90K as a compliance engineer for a utilities giant.

All that starting out a minority living in a shitty neighborhood where people settle for having no future doing what everyone around them is doing, trying to find a cheap way to live looking for their next hustle. No fucking ambition. A simple choice can change the direction your life takes. It's up to you to be informed of your options.
