Minarets and those stupid onion domes are ugly as shit, IMO. I will, however concede that the geometric patterns in their mosaics are not only beautiful but technically impressive.

Those types of mosques you are talking about mostly originated from Turkey.
There are way more interesting and less kitschy mosques.

Here's one of my most favourites ones, in Samarra, Iraq. Islamic architecture is extremely impressive and was often far more advanced than the western one.
