This probably makes me an asshole, but whenever Christians or otherwise religiously active people die, a big part of me thinks "well at least nobody intelligent died..."

I know it's still tragic, but at least it was a quick death, and their final moment would have most likely have been of pure, ignorant happiness. They were probably never going to benefit the species, and they never had to confront the real faults in their lives. They lived happy thinking that god loved them, thinking the future would pan out, and they died thinking they're immortal souls will live forever.

I guess I struggle to empathize with the deceased because I don't see them to have suffered. They simply lived and died.

Not really, you can see the traffic bollard and all the timbers indicating that there was works being done on the bridge above (look it up, there were). This isn't terrible luck it is insanely bad timing, the structural integrity of the slab gave way at exactly the right time to obliterate any living thing in that cab.
