Once you got freenet up and running, browse the Index Site and get yourself a listing of all frost boards and add them there.

Okay if you're using freenet, just a little hint: Use an encrypted partition and install freenet on that partition.
Trucrypt is currently not advisable, many say microsofts bitlocker will do the trick.

Doing this, you can actually set the file safety of freenet to low/disabled, which will give you a minor speedup.

Second thing the connection safety. The safer you make your connection, the slower your transfer-rates will be.
Usually middle will be enough, I even had low on for some time without seeing any benefit though.

You won't have "friends" in freenet so don't even think about adding some.
It would be the most secure option, but you need to find at least 10 same willed people who are on freenet the same time you are for it to work properly.
If you don't have a server cluster for yourself, you'll have to trust strangers.

If you choose strangers (what 99% of you will and have to do), the network will search for strangers to establish a stable flow of data.
Normally you'd be connected to around 30 strangers before you can get any decent downloads going.

All in all every node (you are a node yourself) has a cache of data every other stranger requested, that's how the system works in a nutshell.
