First of all, they were good musicians. Not great, not even noteworthy in the sea of other professional musicians, but they were capable. Anyone saying otherwise is retarded.

About Kurt specifically, he was a very good lyricist and composer. This is probably why they were so popular. If you listen to the lyrics in most songs, they are very well thought out.

If you're trying to get into them or have an opinion on them when you weren't around when they were relevant then those opinions are invalid and/or hipster ramblings of wannabe cool kids.
If you were there when they were relevant then you'd know they were groundbreaking and paved the way for a lot of other bands. They created a genre. Anyone who jumped on the bandwagon after he topped himself takes penises in places that aren't meant to have them in.

Having said that, Nirvana is no longer relevant but their music is still good.

I believe that because the case was horribly handled, with the verdict of suicide being determined day one without a proper investigation. Courtney was able to feed the narrative about Kurt when in fact Kurt was in the process of leaving Courtney through a divorce. There is even the issue alone of Kurt having 3X the lethal dose of heroin in his body which alone would have killed him before he would have been able to have operated a shotgun blast to the face.
