It has never affected my social life, I have a handful of true friends, and a great variety of acquaintances. It does affect people differently though, so don't rationalize something simply from your experience. It doesn't change how I learn, I actually become more interested when I have a smoke, and I know a great deal about science, at least a lot more than the average Joe. I think if you're already depressed and have a lot of issues, then you shouldn't smoke it, just like you shouldn't drink or take any intoxicants while depressed. Tetrahydrocannabinol is just a drug like any other. that makes it neither good nor bad. Its how people use it. It has moderate pain reducing capabilities.
