1.We don't intend to spout what seems like 'bullshit', but when literally every other party is making exorbitant promises, everybody else has to follow suit. Blame the politicians of yesterday for starting the cycle.

2. Sometimes, like a lot of people in the country we may make a private racist joke. Although I can safely say it no more represents the individual party than a racist in any other workplace.

>>604210741
I do actually agree with ultimately leaving the EU, while it needs a lot more though and planning than what UKIP would like people to believe and is a very high-risk move.

Right-wing, fairly traditional but too 'loud' as a party. While I am quite surprised that Cameron (quite a nice guy in person, actually) refused any kind of coalition, I can understand given the accusations of extremity and controversial nature of many of their policies.

Personally, I agree with legalised handguns and stricter border control but Farage is little more than a showman, although a talented one at that.

Educated American here with a couple questions.

1) What do you think of Crosby? Do you think he'll win the election for you?

2) Say you don't win a majority. What parties are the Tories prepared to go into coalition with for real? I know Cameron's talked shit about UKIP but they're your likeliest bedfellows.

3) What's your opinion on English Votes for English Laws? Also, are the Tories trying to provoke Scottish independence on purpose? Because Cameron threw a real bone to the SNP by talking about EVEL the day after the referendum.

If I lived there I'd probably vote Lib Dem, Labour or Green but you Tories definitely aren't as bad as our Republicans.

1. While I've never met him personally, I've seen him around and he does have a certain off-putting calmness to him. From his reputation as a political 'wizard' and from what I've seen of his history I'd bet my overpriced Oxford degree that if anybody can win it for the Conservatives, it's Crosby.
2. Cameron made is very clear in January that he wouldn't work with UKIP. Personally I believe they are the most similar to us with their very traditional ideas and polices. The Lib Dems are the most likely, given how they have reduced themselves to being little more than a Conservative booster in the public eye. However, I do wonder whether or not they'll be enough to establish majority. So overall, when put in the situation. I'd have to say UKIP.
3. In a way it makes sense, it creates a sense of peaceful independence between Scotland and England, something that many people have been fighting for. However, it's going to create much more of a divide than it's going to fix. I know Cameron means well but this is just a bold power play.
Just wondering, what do you mean by educated?

>>604220217
Average prestige is 10th on MW2, Cameron drags us down though.

>>604220221
He doesn't have the best of reputations, and there are many other suitable candidates but I believe he probably could lead the Torys. It would be rather unremarkable though.

>>604220016
Maybe, I won't say much more.

>>604221170
I have noticed that historically Conservative leadership has dragged the party down considerably. I personally like Cameron and so do many others but there is a stigma around private school candidates such as him. I believe a working/middle class candidate would be the best move right now, showing that the party is beneficial to all.

I mean I know about and follow your politics, which is fairly uncommon in my part of America. I'm well-read and I'm getting a master's degree in history.

In any case, thanks for the response. I just read about Crosby in the Guardian, and it seems like he might be leading the Tories to a close win against Miliband at the cost of throwing away the rebranding effort. It does seem pretty obvious that in the long term, the Tories will have to moderate in some respects to keep winning elections. Although the same applies to our own Republicans, and they've doubled down on extremism due to internal dynamics in the base.

For your sakes, either the Lib Dems or UKIP will have to make up the difference, because I'm pretty sure they wouldn't work in a coalition with the other in it. I doubt UKIP will be able to; most of the seats they win will be taken from you guys. The Lib Dems might; their polling is terrible but their vote's held up in their seats better than average.

As for Scotland, I've heard the argument that the Tories were secretly rooting for Scottish independence because it would guarantee an eternal Tory government in the rest of the UK. I just wondered how much truth there was to that. Obviously they can't openly campaign for such an occurrence because it'd look bad, but by stoking English nationalism (and therefore Scottish nationalism in response) it becomes likelier to happen.

I definitely think anything related to raising student loans is a critical mistake. ANgering a major demographic aside, I believe further education is at a good balance. Anybody can access it and then pay it off when you're properly employed but at the same time the seemingly high fees make people have to think it through while hopefully dissuading degrees in useless subjects. The whole English Votes for English Laws is a terrible idea simply because of how it was initially presented. The house is in quiet uproar and disagreement about it, especially with how it was initially put forward. Only other thing I can think of is taking too much of a fence sitting view on the EU. Truly sorry about the student loans though and best of luck in the future.

Economic equality is an important aspect in any functional modern society although you shouldn't mix those who are genuinely downtrodden and those who are outright lazy. I believe the Conservative party should take on more lower-class background members like me to just slightly break the stigma with the current private school bunch leading the country. (Cameron, Osbourne, Boris etc) Miliband is alright in this sense. This should hopefully lead to a mild change in policy and ideas pushed forward.

I keep up on politics from all over the world, not just Britain. My ancestors came over from Scotland, and I got to visit there once, but that's not really why. It's just interesting to me, and besides this is a very unique time in British politics. There hasn't been this much uncertainty in a long time and I'm curious to see what will come of it. The post-war settlement seems to have run its course and Britain is going to have to figure out a new constitutional settlement for itself.

America's going to be in that same boat in a few years; the New Deal coalition that propelled the Democrats ran out of steam in the 70s and the Reagan revolution is running out of steam now. The Republicans are winning elections in the short term, but when they run out of angry white old people in a decade or two they're going to have to reinvent themselves to stay relevant. If this gridlock continues much longer, America will have to figure out a new constitutional settlement as well to keep the government running. By the time we get around to addressing our own issues, Britain will have had this election, and Scotland and the EU will be dealt with one way or another, and perhaps your own experience will be able to inform the decisions we'll have to make.

For that matter, what do you think about Labour's idea of a constitutional convention? I know Miliband's gotten shat on for it and people think it's a non-answer to the Scottish question. It strikes me as a reasonable way forward, but it also seems like an oddly American answer to the problem so I'd be surprised if it happens.

On the contrary. The Republicans' base is white conservatives, and they've got almost no minority voters. They lost the 2012 election despite winning the white vote, and that's the first time in history that's happened.

The long-term trend is that Hispanic immigration and higher birth rates for blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans will shrink the current Republican coalition and increase the current Democratic coalition. Also, young white people are trending Democratic. To survive past the 2020s, the Republicans will need to peel off at least one minority group from the Democratic coalition, but it's hard to see how they'll do that right now. It's quite possible they'll go under; they would be the third major right-wing party to do that in American history. If that happened, I don't know who'd fill the vacuum.

It's always good to see well read peopl who take an interest in international politics and how it all compares. This is easily the most accessible time to do so and so I cannot see why one would not. With the sudden surge in power from other parties upsetting the big three, the recently (half) resolved Scottish issue and the upcoming EU problems, this is definitely a time of political uncertainty. You are correct with Milliband's recent shit taking as a result of his idea of constitutional convention and despite being a typical Labour/American type idea, it does strike me as somewhat of a valid idea. At least he's proposing more than just Evel. Just wondering, what do you think of Britain on the world stage? I'm curious about how Americans really see us. Most polls are generally positive.

Not until we can get a referendum on leaving the EU. They're the main drivers of the open borders idea.

This is very correct. We are experiencing something quite on the opposite with the Lib Dems. Due to the many public accusations of 'going to bed with the Tories', it has left them fairly unpopular and little more than a booster to get majority. The Greens are bigger and it makes me wonder what will happen when they're gone. It'll be a sad day either way.
