They don't feel the same way, they don't want to "just be friends" with you. Just because you decide you no longer love someone doesn't mean that their feelings fall short too.

From that point until they can eventually get over it, you'll still be that other person to them, that romantic partner, that person they loved, while you see them as nothing more than a friend.

You downgrade them from their position and while they wallow in their sorrow, trying to get over you, they get to see you go off and be with other people despite them still loving you. Then they have to just grin and bear it, accept that because you're "just friends" now.

In the context of all things discussed so far... If you're intending to be "nice" and do all that's best for you two, then it's for the best that you don't speak up about wanting to be friends until they're over you or with someone else.

The reason for that being that you obviously just broke their heart, and while you don't love them anymore, they love you. They may let the breakup through because there's nothing they can really do, but that doesn't mean they accept it.

That they all of a sudden no longer see you as their lover. You're still their loved romantic interest. Being away from you, being demoted to a friend, knowing you're just going to go off and date others, if not outright seeing you do so, all that will consistently hurt them and solidify that pain that they've been dumped. Recovery is a lot easier for their life if you're not in it.
