why do you think it's acceptable to spend 6 days tracking drums for an album to then just sound replace everything, you lazy cunt? learn to mix live drums.

shit and pointless. learn to tune the bass drum and mix it in properly. you think pink fucking floyds had subkick mics? bitch please.
>>
>>600070628
I record drums live 90 % of the time. Some times ill throw a sample on the kick just to make it a bit more full.
most the time if I do this the drummer sucks so I have to do crazy edits because they have money constraints. With bigger groups they usually know there stuff and I dont do this as much.... USUALLY

A good sound engineer will know how to get the best results sonically from a physical space so knowledge of acoustics/physics helps. Repairing gear also requires electronics knowledge. You might as well say software engineers aren't real engineers, but look at all the shit you use daily that they put hard work into.

Actually, if you think about it, they engineer the music. They take the individual parts, put them all together in the way that it sounds best, and then you have a song.

They "engineer" the song.

Quit being a jealous faggot, and go back to your boring dead end job that makes you want to hang yourself.

Are solstice sacrifices really present in music industry?
>>
>>600072362

I have many musician friends, and a friend who went to Full Sail who said I had a great ear. I then started mixing live music. No training, faked it, and was great at it. That's when I was going to take a shot at recording engineering.

I still would LOVE to do it, but financially, it's not a great move. I think I'd be good, maybe even great at it, But I got bills to pay.

Also, because I bailed on NY, long story short, I own a business now. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be where I'm at if I stuck it out in NY, but then again, who knows where I could have been.

Maybe I'll still do it some day. I miss the fuck out of live mixing.

Notice the lack of 'sound' engineer degrees.
>>
>>600073869
you guys need to get off your fucking high horses jesus
>>
>>600073597
Fuck off yourself. Sound becomes an extremely complex field between electronics, physics and acoustics, and recording. You can get a PhD in just compression because its so insanely complex
>>
>>600070431
Is it worth getting headphone that produce sound at sub 20hz and over 20khz since that is the upper and lower range most humans can hear?
>>
>>600073597
Once again. You have no idea. Without knowing what you are doing, sitting down to set up, record, mix and master a track to a standard deemed acceptable to be released would be fucking hard for anyone.

sitting down to write a program without knowing what you are doing is also going to be fucking hard to do to an acceptable standard.

Also, quite a lot of sound engineers write their own pieces of software to suit specific needs. And also build equipment to suit specific needs. And also design precise acoustically sound environments to suit specific needs.

An engineer is a professional practitioner of engineering, concerned with applying scientific knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to develop solutions for technical, societal and commercial problems. Engineers design materials, structures, and systems while considering the limitations imposed by practicality, regulation, safety, and cost.

>TLDR : A engineer + problem = No problem (Music isn't a problem)

The fact that you stated 'societal' problems, then stated that music isn't a problem is sort of contradictory. Music, and audio in general (sound engineers don't exclusively work with just music) form a big part of society. People have expectations, and sound engineers meet these expectations by overcoming various problems in any stage of the process of producing audio to bring it to an acceptable standard

You all are idiots. but not able to use grammar so im not suprised.. Synonym-definition-a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language, for example shut is a synonym of close. Now. Engineer synonyms. designer, planner, builder, architect, producer, developer, creator; inventor, originator. Engineer's 2nd definition is also just -a person who controls an engine. So based on that..Game designers use engines to make games. So game designers are game engineers. i dont post ever.

Why didn't you do something good with your life?
>>
>>600080093
I'm not even OP. But I play and record in my spare time and I know it's hard. Go to a recording session and see how half the time is just pissing about with cables, getting sound levels right, eliminating mic leakage, positioning shit to get good acoustics - then there's the unpredictable things that go wrong and the ad-hoc workarounds you need to think creatively about. If you haven't tried it then you really won't appreciate it. There's a reason these people are sought after in the industry. Why would someone hire Steve Albini rather than take their chances on their own?

You think it's just pressing a fucking button?

>>
>>600080681
this is called technical work, and we all agree on that point. but OP is nowhere close to being an engineer and should stop calling himself one.
>>
>>600080681
lifting rocks is fucking hard, should we consider them rock lifting engineer you smelly douche nozzle
>>
>>600080788
That's what they call it - and it's more technical than you might think. It's beneficial to know electronics (analogue and digital), logarithms and the principles of sound waves for starters.

But sorry that the term "engineer" pricks at the precious egos of you "proper" engineers...
>>
So this is what this thread turned into........

>headphones

Not original question asker buy, erm... why?

Also, what headphones should I buy sub £250/$300
>>
>>600081493
i am not even an engineer. i've got the "official' title but i would NEVER call myself an engineer.
>>
>>600081493
no more an engineer than Dr, Dre or Dr. John are Doctors only a faggot adds titles to their name/profession they haven't earned
>>
>>600081935
Well the profession has been instrumental in the industry (no pun) since the 50s.

I suppose it mainly has historical ties, when music was literally recorded in labs by men in white coats using equipment that cost millions.

Still though, it's a valued job and bridges the gap between the creative's wishes and the reality of the finished article.

What about people who build the acoustically treated environments in studios? Are they not engineers? What about people who build their own compressors, etc?
>>
>>600081738
I like my sennheiser hd 600
>>
>>600070431
Why is everything so fucking LOUD?

I listen to the classics on vinyl not because I think it sounds warmer or whatever nonsense but because it was mixed with varying degrees of loudness.
>>
>>600082330
there are acoustical engineers, you don't find them sitting behind mixing desks, more likely running cad simulations of room designs
>>
>>600074310
Aliasing? Where? I'm sure all digital recording gear will filter its input to the Nyquist limit (i.e. if something can record at 96kHz then there's going to be a 48kHz lowpass filter in the analogue domain). Where would aliasing appear in the chain? Apart from intentional uses like bit crushing...
>>
>>600082911
there is actually an explanation for this. in the 80s started a thing called the loudness wars. basically as time went on mastering became louder and louder and its gross. it ruins the dynamics of a song and turns everything into square waves. and it is a damn shame
>>
>>600082996
Some recording engineers also know about this. Granted, some people use the term just because they have a laptop and FL Studio but it's unfair to judge the profession by those guys.

It's a big mental box of tricks that comprises the creative and the technical. It's about solving technical problems, of which there can be many.

Assembling modules created by engineers is not the same as engineering, you faggot.

Build the desk out of resisters and capacitors and opamps and then maybe you can claim to be an engineer.
>>
>>600083474
Apparently the album Californication is the most overcompressed album in history. I looked at the waveform and it is brutal. Clip city.

>>
>>600088629

why do bulbs (tube) preamps sound better? what does it change on the audio signal?
>>

cause the don't square wave clip until way overdriven
>>
>>600071002
why the hell would he be deadmau5
>>
>>600088751
well the main reason is cause when a tube peaks it distorts instead of clips and a lot of people like that distorted sound. a lot of people argue a more natural sound as well... but it is a preference thing for sure
>>
>>600088970
you get more pleasing harmonic tones from a tube

What's your opinion on using VST channel strips such as the Waves Abbey Road TG, or the Scheps 73. Only use them on instrument tracks or Is it feasible to use them on the output channel?

how the fuck do i get my god damned recorded volume to match professional recordings without distortion/buzz?
>>
>>600096147

Not OP , try doing a mixdown with a limiter cranking +20 dB on the master, once everything is balanced, it will be peaking around -10 to - 12 dB

render to wav, then multiband compression for the initial volume boost, then depending the on the genre, another 3rd party compressor , and finally get the loudness with some shit like this , its currently my favorite http://aom-factory.jp/products/invisible-limiter/
>>
>>600096413

When are you going to an hero (do it you loser faggot).
>>
I am going to sound like a massive faggot for asking this but... In that picture you provided OP, whats the point in ALL of those little knobs, like, what do all of them do? they all couldn't possibly edit the sounds/music enough for it to be noticeable, right? I dunno, just always seen them and wondered.

it doesn't really even sound good through my speakers, it's quiet and i'm getting quite a bit of buzz on my low ends.

granted, i'm not using that nice of a recorder (some presonus USB audiobox), and an sm-57 on my amp.
