I enjoyed this film. It's not anywhere near a 10/10 but as the movie is about a 17 year old girl who decided to become a prostitute it's right up my alley.

Everyone is afraid to criticise this film in case people think they don't 'get it' and they lose their film reviewing cred.

But seriously, I've been through this film over and over again and heard so many different theories on what it all means.

And you know what? Not even the best theory out there can thread the plot elements together into an even halfway meaningful story.

Like yeah woo we're so edgy and artsy and vague and you have to find your own meaning.

But like... even being really lenient with connecting it all up, it still doesn't matter a damn.

The story is sophomoric and superficial.

The film gives you no reason to CARE about anything.

It keeps you detached from everything. You can't even get in anyone's fucking head, much as it likes to pretend we're exploring some deep subconscious shit.

We just end up with a deliberately misleading confusing mish-mash of some middle-aged punk's life who's afraid of being a responsible adult.

Like we should give a fuck that he lies to himself!

Give us literally anything about the other characters in his life! If you present a protagonist it is impossible to empathise with, at least have the fucking courtesy to have some other people well fleshed out, I mean fuck!

My favourite film is Unforgiven. It recontextualises a whole genre and gives an emotional depth to a slew of previously 2 dimensional characters in popular culture.

"It's a hell of a thing, killin' a man. You take away everything he's got - everything he's gonna have."

It suprises you by putting weight to every nameless saloon patron who goes down in a rain of well-intentioned bullets.

Those people had lives; families. And the person pulling the trigger knows that.

The audience is the trigger happy kid who wants to be a western style bandit. But by the end of the film we no longer have the stomach for it, as we have now seen the emotional trauma necessary to be that person. They aren't cool bad boys who live free - they are broken sociopaths with no hope for redemption, who can only live on the fringes of society or die.
