I wasn't going to jump in on this, but shit man, that last comment. It's not 'the shittier it sounds the better'. That isn't *a* mindset for anyone. I don't want to go too far into it otherwise i'd have to write an essay. There was a lot of bands back then/now, and they all had their styles. some more gutteral than others, but to each his own. Some vox mirrored the music, hard as shit/fast, etc. Opinion differs, but that singing/musical style became one of the pillars of punk/hardcore music. Some did it better than others, definitely. It's more about passion/aggression/anger, etc. All of these were undercurrents of the music and therefore people got angry. They yelled, screamed, and tried to freak out squares or whatever. Also, the dude making the point about sound quality is spot on. I'll admit, the bands attempting to emulate that now get my goat, but that was the best option at the time of the first waves and moslty all they could afford. It was never 'the shittier it sounds the better', farquad.
